Optimization - Adsense Ad Colours

Introduction

Probably the most important part of your Adsene optimization is colours. Even if your ad placements and ad formats are perfect, the wrong colour can render all your work useless. In this article we are going to take a critical look at how an Adsense ad can be customized to maximize earnings and user attention.

First, lets take a look at the make up of a typical Adsense ad:

Adsense Code

As you can see the ad has a Title, Description and a URL. The real key to choosing your Adsense colours is to know which part of the ad receives the most attention (visually). We have broken it down for you below:

Ad Attention
Adsense Code

As you can see the Title attracts the most attention, then the Description after and the URL is barely noticed. To maximize our Adsense earnings we can utilize these figures to colour our Ads. The key to success is to shade your ad colours so that the Title is the most noticeable, then the description and then the URL last. You can achieve this effect by altering the shade of the colours as they process down from Title to URL (top to bottom).

If you are lucky enough to have Photoshop, then you can use an excellent tool known as the 'Custom Colours' dialog. This dialog shows colour palettes with incremental colour shades. Its an amazing tool for your Adsense arsenal.

Adsense Code

We can use this Custom Colour dialog to select colours that become increasing faint as the ad progresses down to the URL text. This will make our ad Title appear as the most distinct part and hence receive the most attention.

Here is an example we made earlier:

Blending your ads into your sites theme

Another excellent technique is to blend your ads into your web pages theme. This involves setting ad Title colours to your web page heading colours. Similarly, ad descriptions should match site text content colours. The key to successfully blending your Adsense ads into your site is to achieve a balance where the ads are indistinguishable from the actual content. Then, with a little altering of shades you can make the ads appear more attractive than the content (subliminal message). Using this technique for Adsense effectively can triple your Adsense over night and is an excellent point to focus on if you have having trouble increasing your Adsense earnings.

Back Colours

In the past, people have used the back colour to hide the Google trade mark from the ads completely. This was achieved by having a web site with a black background which matched the black Google trademark. These days, Google has become clued up to this trick and just recently changed the ad formats completely. The revenue on these sites has dropped to almost zero since they were just created for Adsense in the first place. We recommend that you keep the background colour as white, it is the most professional and you can really ruin the look of your ads by changing it.

Tips and Tricks

Experiment with colours week-in week-out until you achieve the right balance.

Use the Adsense tracking channels to monitor ad performance on pages. Create channels for each type of ad, skyscraper, button etc..

Invest in a photo package such as PhotoShop or similar to help optimize Adsense colours and styles.

Try not to change the background colour of the Adsense ads unless its absolutely necessary.

Use darker shades or attractive colours for the ad Title. Remember that the URL part of the ad receives the least amount of attention.
