Advanced - Heat Maps

Introduction

Heat maps are graphic representations of web pages with coloured hot spots depicting active areas. These hot spots represent the parts of the page which receive the most attention from the human eye. Similar to weather satellites, the brighter red/orange colours are the most active areas and should be an Adsense publishers number one choice for ad placement.

At accelerated ideas we have constructed our own heat map for our Adsense page:

From the heat map you can see that the hot spots are mainly the top left, middle top and left panel. The right column does receive a fair amount of attention but mainly because it contains the navigational links for our site.

Placing the Adsense in the top centre of the screen is one of the strongest ad placement areas. You should not put ads such as banners at the far top of the screen because they are almost always overlooked along with the site logo. Another good Adsense placement is to wrap the ad around the content in the middle/centre of the screen. This area remains a focus point for the majority of web sites.

If you have read our other Optimization section on Ad Placement you will see similar trends with the Heat Maps shown here. The top left of the screen is one of the most active areas, followed by the main content on the page. Depending if a user is interested in your content their attention will drift further down the page and fade out. If the content on your page is good then the heat map remains strong until the end of the article. This is another place where publishers should consider placing an ad.

Google have also published their very own heat map to help you decide on the best ad placements. You can see a large view of the heat map here:

Why should I use a heat map?

Heat maps are probably the strongest tool for any Adsense publisher. Getting the optimal Adsense placement means you're potentially getting the maximum Adsense earnings. Some companies do provide a heat map service where you can pay a small fee and they will provide heat maps for your site. These are well worth a try if you are serious about earning money from Adsense. You will also need a fair amount of web traffic to make any use of heat maps for Adsesnse. At the end of the day CTR is only a number and its your web traffic that decides total earnings.

Tips and Tricks

Use heat maps to find the most active areas on your web pages

Consider investing in a professional heat map from an experienced company. They can provide you with new information vital to increasing your Adsense earnings.

The most active parts of your page are not always the best place for Adsense. Remember that your content is site specific and not every heat map will suite your ad placements.

If your programming skills are good, why not try a free heat map component that will allow you to create your own heat maps by embedding some code in your web pages?
