How to increase Adsense CTR

Even a site with great traffic and a huge number of visitors can suffer from a poor CTR. So how can you increase the CTR of your Adsense ads and get the revenue flowing? Below we have included some great tips to help you improve your CTR values and get your daily Adsense clicks much higher.

CTR stands for Click Through Rate and is obtained by dividing the number of users who clicked on an ad on a web page by the number of times the ad was delivered (impressions). For example, if a banner ad was displayed 1000 times (impressions) and ten people clicked on it (clicks), then the resulting CTR would be 1 percent. Research suggests that click-through rates have fallen gradually over time, currently averaging much less than 1 percent. In most cases, a 2% click through rate would be considered very successful. This may be because of the increased awareness of advertising campaigns and also their adoption worldwide. Google introduction of media rich ad types is aimed it reinvigorating the advertising network. Contextually appropriate ads, unusual formats, and more prominent ads typically have higher click-through rates than standard banner ads.

The following factors are all essential if you want to increase your Adsense earnings:

  • Ad Placement
  • Ad Type
  • Ad Colours
  • Ad Fonts
  • sAd Sizes
Let's take a look at those one by one. Remember, that when altering your Adsense ads you must keep to the Adsense rules or you'll risk being banned. Make sure that users can distinguish between ads and your sites content. Do not overlap Adsense ads with content, use Adsense in pop-ups and don't use them on error and registration pages.

Ad Placement to Increase CTR

Ad placement should be your number one focal point for increasing CTR. It amazing how many publishers put their Adsense ads either at the bottom of their site or in places where a user won't even go. Heat maps are a great start in deciding where to place your ads. See our Heatmaps section for examples of common heatmaps and which areas users tend to click on sites. Most publishers will agree that the top of the site has a much higher CTR than the bottom, if a user is not content with your content then they will immediately look elsewhere for the information they want. So this includes clicking on ads.

Google analytics has the option of Site Overlay which is a great start in deciding where users are likely to click on your site. There are other tools on the market, some of which are very good. Clickheat is a great open source heatmap tool for beginners. FuseStats is also another good tool for collecting heatmaps for your pages.

Navigational areas are great place to focus on ad placement. Following the example above, if a user is not satisfied with the content you are offering then they will look elsewhere to find it. Navigational areas will be the natural choice. Side banners on the left or right are excellent choices. Most publishers will design their sites with space for at least 200px down either channel for navigation and ads. Google provides ads in these sizes and both the 160 x 600 and 120 x 600 ads will fit nicely down the sides of most websites and blogs.

A skyscraper ad placed down the side of your site will consume a large area of the site, ideal for pages with long text areas where the user might have to scroll. As the user scrolls they are also staying within clicking range of the ads. Its important that no matter where the user is on your site,

On the flip side of the coin, if you have long article type sites where the content spans from top to bottom, placing ads at the end of the article is a great place to grab the readers attention. Once again, when the user has read the article they will immediately look elsewhere to move on, give them ads and you'll increase the chance that they'll click on them

Ad Types to Increase CTR

Ad types are extremely important in increasing CTR. There are several types of Adsense ads; text ads, image ads and link units. Each ad type has its advantages. So for example, placing an image banner in between your content will help it blend in and catch the users attention. Vice versa, Link Units placed close to a navigation area will help the user to search for ads of a certain type.

Publishers must decide on the balance between text and images. If you site has a lot of images then text ads will be more appropriate. The same is true for sites with a lot of textual content, image ads will stand out more. Link Units are the obvious choice for placing ads in tight corners or where you have limited space on your site. The new Adsense rules allow you to place up to 3 Link Units on your pages.

Ad Colours to Increase CTR

The most obvious feature to customize with your Adsense ads is the colour. Some people prefer to have their ads in the same colour scheme as their stylesheets, others prefer to have Adsense ads displayed in complimentary colours and some people will use the opposite spectrum to make their ads really stand out. The balance between inviting users to click your ads and making it obvious that you want them to only click ads is a fine balance and a very important one.

There are some great tools online for finding complimentary colours for your Adsense ads, and we highly recommend you use them.

Ad Fonts to Increase CTR

Very little needs to be said about matching your Adsense fonts to be the same font as the rest of the site. If the fonts don't match, then the ads are going to look like mistakes on your site that just don't fit in. Users are very wary of clicking on things that don't look like the rest of the site. So make a note!

Ad Size

A lot has been written about choosing the right Ad sizes for your site. There is a certain myth around which ad sizes are better than others. Ad sizes need to be chosen solely on the design of your site rather than on the expected cost per click (CPC). Some believe that having fewer ads on your page will increase the CPC of your ads, but we believe that having more ads on your site will give users more choice.

Some of the best Ad sizes include:
  • 160 x 600
  • 120 x 600
  • 468 x 60
  • 336 x 280
  • 250 x 250
They are all very standard in the advertising world and won't consume too much of your site. Skyscrapers are ideal for the side channels of your site, whilst the others are great for slotting in between your content. The 250 x 250 ad unit is a great choice for image ads because if has symmetrical sides. Remember that when choosing ad sizes for image ads, it's important to go for a size that is common with advertisers.

In recent times bloggers have opted to go for several smaller image ads, around the 125 x 125 mark and slot them neatly one after another down the right hand channels. This is very smart technique, and is especially good if you have other ad networks that offer the same sized ads. It is also a great way to improve the visual appearance of you site because each image ad will have been designed by a different graphic designer.
