Delphi - Microsoft Word COM (2)
You can open these files in Delphi to explore the range of methods and properties available to the developer. It is entirely possible to automate any task you can perform in Word manually.
This includes adding clip art, changing background colours and even performing spell checks. In this article we will just concentrate on basic writing and formatting of a Word document with the aim of creating a 'Report' style document.
Below is a snippet showing how to create a COM object by calling the CoWordApplication.Create method:
We first declare the following variables:
Var Word: _Application; AppWasRunning: boolean; Unknown: IUnknown; Result: HResult;
Now for the chunk of code that checks if Word is running in memory and either creates a new object or links to the existing one. This method is highly important if you want to get to grips with using the COM interface with Word. We must create the COM class before we can use any of the features of the Word application. Note: Add this method to you code wisely and do not create the COM object until it is required in your application, this will help improve your applications performance.
Result := GetActiveObject(CLASS_WordApplication, nil, Unknown);
if (Result = MK_E_UNAVAILABLE) then
Word := CoWordApplication.Create
else begin
{ make sure no other error occurred during GetActiveObject
}
OleCheck(Result);
OleCheck(Unknown.QueryInterface(_Application, Word));
AppWasRunning := True;
end;
Word.Visible := True;
Word.Documents.Add('C:\MyTemplate.dot', EmptyParam);
