Shuttle XPC P2 3700G - Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86 GHz Category: Desktops The Shuttle P2 3700g is a relative steal among pricey, high-performance, small-form-factor PCs, but we don't see why Shuttle locks its customers out of getting inside the case. Apple iMac (20-inch, 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM) Category: Desktops With its super-elegant new design and a strong configuration, Apple's new iMac competes with the PC desktop market better than perhaps any previous Mac to date. Unless you're a gamer or an upgrade enthusiast, we can think of very few reasons not to make an iMac your next desktop. Velocity ProMagix E2010 Category: Desktops Velocity Micro's ProMagix E2010 is an impressive machine for a fixed-config retail PC, but we really don't need a second optical drive or a floppy drive. Apple iMac Core 2 Duo (17-inch, 1.83GHz) Category: Desktops The 17-inch iMac is missing a few features you might like--SuperDrive and a remote control, to name two--but it still makes a stellar home PC, thanks to its great design, new Core 2 Duo processor, and superior software bundle. Plus, its price makes it a borderline budget PC. Apple iMac (24-inch, 2.8GHz Extreme Edition) Category: Desktops With the same elegant design as its 20-inch, 2.4GHz sibling, the 24-inch, 2.8GHz iMac offers 30 percent more screen area and a modest performance boost. The iMac competes with the PC desktop market now better than perhaps any previous Mac to date, but the added cost of the larger, faster model might put off some buyers--especially if you are a gamer or an upgrade enthusiast. HP Business Dc7100 (Pentium 4 3.2GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD, XP Pro) Category: Desktops A strong performer with a flexible design and an excellent warranty, the HP Compaq dc7100 is perfect for corporate environments. Apple Power Mac G5 (dual 2.7GHz) Category: Desktops Apple's latest high-end Power Mac G5 is a blazing machine that stands up without blinking to the best of the competition, but we're still annoyed by some of its shortcomings. Dell Studio Hybrid Category: Desktops If you're considering all of the computers in the $700 to $1,000 price range, the Dell Studio Hybrid is not very compelling. However, if you limit yourself to the very specific niche of small PCs, you'll appreciate this system's clever design and its relatively powerful hardware. HP Blackbird 002 Category: Desktops HP's Blackbird 002 earns the highest rating this editor has ever given a desktop PC. Its design rivals the Apple Mac Pro, it takes risks that benefit your upgrade path, it's fast, and it's competitively priced. If you can afford it, and you want a high-end gaming PC, buy this one. End of story. eMachines T3256 Category: Desktops The T3256 continues eMachines' dominance in the budget class with strong features and performance. HP Pavilion Slimline s3200t Category: Desktops The HP Pavilion Slimline s3200t offers perhaps the strongest bang for the buck we've ever seen thanks to its HD DVD/Blu-ray hybrid optical drive and its strong overall configuration. It outclasses every other HD-equipped system we've seen so far. If you're shopping for a living room PC and want complete HD format flexibility, this is the system we'd buy. Gateway Profile 6 SBb (Pentium 4 3 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD) Category: Desktops The Profile 6SB from Gateway is an all-in-one PC that offers the configurability, manageability, and lower price of a standard desktop. But it sacrifices so much in the way of design, we wonder, why bother? Cisnet NASCAR PC Category: Desktops Cisnet's NASCAR PC will please the racing fan who's just getting into computers, but we can't imagine anyone else getting into this themed budget PC. Sony VAIO VGX-TP25E Home Theater PC Category: Desktops You might be drawn in by the VAIO TP25's looks and features, but considering both its price and what it lacks, we hope you'll turn away. Other vendors offer similar capabilities for much less, and Sony charges way too much for this system's few advantages. eMachines T3646 Category: Desktops eMachines T3646 is one of the cheapest desktops available, and unfortunately it shows. It offers some compelling performance, but basic capability is more important in budget systems, and we found this system came up short compared with others in its price range. Dell Dimension E521 Category: Desktops Dell's Dimension E521 doesn't have many bells and whistles, but a powerful dual-core AMD processor lends it unexpected performance and strong bang for the buck. Its speed, Vista Home Premium's Media Center functions, and multiple storage options make this a strong PC for archiving and showing off your digital media. HP Pavilion Slimline s7320n (Celeron M 1.66 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 200 GB HDD) Category: Desktops HP's small-form-factor PC, the Pavilion s7320n Slimline, is a stylish and able budget performer, but its lack of expandability makes it better suited for use as a second PC. EMachines T6532 - Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz Category: Desktops After a slight step back last quarter, eMachines regains its footing with the T6532, a budget PC that delivers more for the money than competing budget systems, including the T-series model it replaces. HP Pavilion Elite m9040n Category: Desktops HP's new digital-media-oriented Pavilion Elite m9040n is fast, loaded with features, and its new looks and newly integrated receivers improve its profile. Our main issue is the redundant bays for two of HP's proprietary external hard drives. If you can get past that, there's a solid desktop here. Dell Dimension 3000 (Celeron D 2.4GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, XP Home) Category: Desktops It's a configurable and well-supported budget PC, but the Dell Dimension 3000 trails eMachines in terms of performance and features. AVADirect Core 2 Duo SLI Category: Desktops This is AVA Direct's debut PC with CNET, and we like what we see so far. A few minor design and config issues aside, the overclocked parts squeeze as much performance as possible, while helping to keep the price somewhat reasonable. We're eager to see more from this small vendor. Maingear F131 SLI Category: Desktops Maingear's F131 SLI takes it to the high-end PC competition, earning itself an Editors' Choice in the process. Without having the full picture of DirectX 10 performance, you're potentially taking a risk buying a high-end gaming PC now. But if you need to make that purchase today, we recommend Maingear with enthusiasm. Dell XPS 600 Desktop Computer for Business Category: Desktops If you can live with knowing that a handful of PCs out there are still faster than yours, we recommend Dell's versatile XPS 600 for the extensive features and the good value it provides. Polywell MiniBox2 939NP Category: Desktops The Polywell MiniBox2 939NP Media Center PC earns points for its dual-core processor and capacious storage, but home-theater enthusiasts will require more A/V input and output choices. Acer Aspire M5100 Category: Desktops For performance-minded shoppers on a budget, the $700 quad-core Acer Aspire M5100 is fast enough to make you think about spending more than you might otherwise. If all you need is a capable PC with a decent hard drive, you can get away with a less expensive dual-core system. |
