Apple iMac (20-inch, 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM) Category: Desktops With its super-elegant new design and a strong configuration, Apple's new iMac competes with the PC desktop market better than perhaps any previous Mac to date. Unless you're a gamer or an upgrade enthusiast, we can think of very few reasons not to make an iMac your next desktop. Apple iMac Core 2 Duo (17-inch, 1.83GHz) Category: Desktops The 17-inch iMac is missing a few features you might like--SuperDrive and a remote control, to name two--but it still makes a stellar home PC, thanks to its great design, new Core 2 Duo processor, and superior software bundle. Plus, its price makes it a borderline budget PC. eMachines T3256 Category: Desktops The T3256 continues eMachines' dominance in the budget class with strong features and performance. Gateway Profile 6 SBb (Pentium 4 3 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD) Category: Desktops The Profile 6SB from Gateway is an all-in-one PC that offers the configurability, manageability, and lower price of a standard desktop. But it sacrifices so much in the way of design, we wonder, why bother? eMachines T3646 Category: Desktops eMachines T3646 is one of the cheapest desktops available, and unfortunately it shows. It offers some compelling performance, but basic capability is more important in budget systems, and we found this system came up short compared with others in its price range. Cisnet NASCAR PC Category: Desktops Cisnet's NASCAR PC will please the racing fan who's just getting into computers, but we can't imagine anyone else getting into this themed budget PC. HP Pavilion Slimline s7320n (Celeron M 1.66 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 200 GB HDD) Category: Desktops HP's small-form-factor PC, the Pavilion s7320n Slimline, is a stylish and able budget performer, but its lack of expandability makes it better suited for use as a second PC. EMachines T6532 - Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz Category: Desktops After a slight step back last quarter, eMachines regains its footing with the T6532, a budget PC that delivers more for the money than competing budget systems, including the T-series model it replaces. AVADirect Core 2 Duo SLI Category: Desktops This is AVA Direct's debut PC with CNET, and we like what we see so far. A few minor design and config issues aside, the overclocked parts squeeze as much performance as possible, while helping to keep the price somewhat reasonable. We're eager to see more from this small vendor. Acer Aspire M5100 Category: Desktops For performance-minded shoppers on a budget, the $700 quad-core Acer Aspire M5100 is fast enough to make you think about spending more than you might otherwise. If all you need is a capable PC with a decent hard drive, you can get away with a less expensive dual-core system. HP Pavilion Slimline s3020n Category: Desktops With new polish and a whole lot of bang for the buck, HP's new Pavilion Slimline s3020n leads the small PC field overall. The glossy black chassis, added expandability, and even a new keyboard make this system attractive both inside and out. Velocity Micro ProMagix E2055 Category: Desktops Not every PC has to be a decent gaming box, but regardless, we expect them to be priced appropriately. Velocity Micro's ProMagix E2055 looks great and does well on some tests, but its gaming scores and its overall bang-for-the-buck fall short. Polywell MiniBox 939AX Category: Desktops The Polywell MiniBox 939AX's rough edges and lack of support docs take the luster off an otherwise functional and affordable Media Center PC. Dell XPS 730 H2C Category: Desktops Dell's updated flagship gaming desktop incorporates the latest hardware from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD into a system that delivers some very impressive gaming scores. We'd give it a higher recommendation if it wasn't so expensive compared with systems from the competition. Dell XPS 710 H2C Edition Category: Desktops Thanks to its market muscle, Dell's XPS 710 H2C delivers state-of-the-art gaming power for significantly less than its boutique competition--and with (basically) identical performance. That fact and the near-silent operation granted by its brand-new cooling hardware make this desktop a CNET Editors' Choice winner. HP Pavilion Media Center a1510n - Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4 GHz Category: Desktops The HP Pavilion a1510n is a perfectly serviceable PC at a reasonable price, but you can get more for your money from other vendors if you're willing to forgo the brand name. Sony VAIO XL3 Category: Desktops If you're inclined to spend a lot for silence and slim design, Sony's new XL3 Digital Living System delivers better than any other full-size home theater PC we've seen. If you're looking for customizability and the most bang for your buck, other vendors have this system beat. Gateway FX4710 desktop computer Category: Desktops The Gateway FX4710 provides enough performance to get you through most of today's games and multimedia software, but the ahead-of-its time memory is wasted on current applications. You can make your PC dollar go further today on a desktop with a more balanced configuration. eMachines T6524 Category: Desktops The versatile, expandable, reasonably powerful eMachines T6524 is a solid family computer and a perfect dorm-room companion that gets mainstream jobs done with aplomb. EMachines T6420 - Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2 GHz Category: Desktops The eMachines T6420 delivers major bang for your buck, including a roomy 200GB hard drive and upgradability in a fixed-configuration retail box. Still, we wish it were able to outperform the model it replaces. Maingear Prelude (AMD Phenom X4 9850) Category: Desktops The Maingear Prelude has the best bang for the buck among midrange gaming PCs. It also has a certain stocky visual appeal. It's missing a few features, and you'll have to jump through a few hoops to make upgrades, but on balance, this system is a great deal. eMachines T6520 Media Center PC Category: Desktops The versatile, expandable, reasonably powerful eMachines T6520 is a solid family computer and a perfect dorm-room companion that gets mainstream jobs done with aplomb. Dell Inspiron 531s Category: Desktops Dell may not have the most bang for the buck in its new, trim Inspiron 531S, but it offers more options than the competition in this new, small-scale Windows desktop. For systems in its slimmed down class, we recommend it. For budget PCs in general, you can find a better deal if you shop around. Gateway FX541XT Category: Desktops Gateway's highest-end performance desktop aspires to be everything to everybody. It takes a few missteps, but mostly it succeeds, especially with its price. Gateway FX7020 Category: Desktops Gateway's FX7020 matches an AMD quad-core CPU and a fast Nvidia graphics card to make a compelling gaming PC, with some basic multimedia features to boot. Upgraders looking for a deal might wish Gateway had added a beefier power supply, but as is, this is a fine PC for its price. |
