It's only been 3 months since the last Firefox release but version 5 marks the beginning of Firefox's new regular release cycle and its attempt to keep up with the increasingly popular Google Chrome browser. There aren't many major differences between version 4 and 5 but there noticeable improvement on the speed and performance side as well as interface changes.
As with all incremental releases, the security is constantly updated and you're better protected against unwanted threats and insecure sites.
Firefox 5 improves speed by loading 20% faster and consuming less memory (RAM).
Another change to version 5 is the introduction of support for CSS animations which is a technology aimed at designers who do not know about JavaScript but want to create web animations.
Other changes in version 5:
* The Do-Not-Track header preference has been moved to increase discoverability
* Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance
* Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas
* Improved spell checking for some locales
* Improved desktop environment integration for Linux users
* WebGL content can no longer load cross-domain textures
* Background tabs have setTimeout and setInterval clamped to 1000ms to improve performance
* The Firefox development channel switcher introduced in previous Firefox Beta updates has been removed
