In American on Purpose, Craig Ferguson delivers a moving and achingly funny memoir of living the American dream as he journeys from the mean streets of Glasgow, Scotland, to the comedic promised land of Hollywood. Along the way he stumbles through several attempts to make his mark—as a punk rock musician, a construction worker, a bouncer, and, tragically, a modern dancer.

To numb the pain of failure, Ferguson found comfort in drugs and alcohol, addictions that eventually led to an aborted suicide attempt. (He forgot to do it when someone offered him a glass of sherry.) But his story has a happy ending: in 1993, the washed-up Ferguson washed up in the United States. Finally sober, Ferguson landed a breakthrough part on the hit sitcom The Drew Carey Show, a success that eventually led to his role as the host of CBS's The Late Late Show. By far Ferguson's greatest triumph was his decision to become a U.S. citizen, a milestone he achieved in early 2008, just before his command performance for the president at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. In American on Purpose, Craig Ferguson talks a red, white, and blue streak about everything our Founding Fathers feared.

Funny and Surprisingly Candid
I am a Craig Ferguson fan, but I never knew what a brilliant and witty writer he was. This book is a well written and surprisingly candid account of his life. Considering his antics as a young man, he is lucky to be alive to tell the tale. Above all, this is a story of hope and inspiration.

A fine, light memoir that is a credit to a comedian that overcame an early addiction
An addictive little memoir about an addictive and funny Scott, the infamous late night talk show host Craig Ferguson. Nobody buys a book entitled, "American on Purpose" expecting a deep dive into a dark character. I bought it to brush up against a funny celebrity; an early summer beach book. Ferguson delivers on this promise with a fine, light memoir that is a credit to a comedian that overcame an early addiction. That said, I've read several books on celebrity addiction and they all have one thing in common. They tell very piercingly funny stories while wobbling down the path between booze and babes. However, when it comes to the criminal truth; the wretched betrayals, the inhuman acts, there is less penetrating detail and more broad hand motions. Maybe it is human nature to skim over the worst of the worst. It also might be political suicide to expose raw truth while you are still in your public prime. There are better true confessionals out there, like Burrough's "Dry", that cut all the way through to the bone. Ferguson's attempt is lighter and funnier and he deserves credit for his effort.

A Very Funny New Patriot
You may recognize Ferguson from The Drew Carry Show or The Late Late Show with Craig. This is his life story, from a boyhood in Glasgow to a brief stink in New York and eventually to L.A. Craig recalls his drunken escapades in a way only a now sober comedian can. He pokes fun at his own previous stupidity and life choices, recognizes his own faults and his role in the failure of his relationships. Through all these recollections Ferguson manages to be hilarious and insightful. Underneath all of the drugs and alcohol it is really a story of a boy who just wanted to live in America. He made me both proud of my country and a little sadness that myself and many others forget that it can be more than political rivalries and shouting matches. You don't have to be a huge fan to find his story entertaining, and his personal growth is moving. This isn't exactly high brow literature, but it's fast paced and entertaining.

"We prepare for glory by failing until we don't"
So many failures he experienced along the way, but glory he did achieve. Craig Ferguson tells all and spares no details in his memoir. Granted, he admits some of the details may be altered or untrue, but when you're a black-out alcoholic for 20-ish years, what do you expect? You write what you remember, whether it really happened that way or not...

This book makes you laugh and breaks your heart, sometimes in the same chapter. You get a rare look into the soul of a man who's lived hard, repented, and got a shot at redemption, which he did not take for granted. It's inspiring, it's depressing, it's one of the most honest books I've ever read. I hope you continue to write more books, Mr. Ferguson, because if they're as good as the first 2 you've written, I'll eat them up as soon as they're on the shelves. Well done, sir, and i eagerly await your next publication.
