Now in its fourth hardcover printing, Define "Normal" has become a word-of-mouth phenomenon. This is a thoughtful, wry story about two girls-a "punk" and a "priss"-who find themselves facing each other in a peer-counseling program, and discover that they have some surprising things in common.

Good Read I found "Define Normal" to be an easy and occasionally cliche, but overall good read. I'm using it for a book club this summer with 9th-12th grade students, and I think the simple language of the book really speaks to Jr. and Sr. High School students. The biggest strength of the book is showing that both sides of the conformist vs. non-conformist battles in school mis-undertand each other - it's much more complicated than a case of the prisses not getting the individuality of the punks, etc. While older audiences may find the book simple, the book will resonate well with a target audience of sixth grade through high school seniors, and possibly even college students with the right facilitator.

Opposite worlds are quite similar Nice book about teenage growth and suffering. Family sucks, school sucks, life is too hard sometimes. It's nice to find a friend you can trust and talk to. Even if the match is no accident, the results can be amazing. This book describes a family's collapse and rebirth with depth of emotion without grinding it out in a huge book. This is a short book, perfect for a teen audience.

Lacking Dept I picked up this book with low expectations, hoping to be pleasantly surprised. What I knew of the plot and themes seemed overly-done and not note-worthy. I thought that maybe suberp writing or excellent characters would be able to save the novel.
However, I was underwhelmed by "Define 'Normal'". I am 14-year-old ninth grader, the very same age and only one grade level older than Jazz and Antonia ("Tone"), and I have read many other novels that were much more rewarding. The number one thing that gives this book its weakness is it's misplaced age level. Jazz started out as an interesting character with seeming potiental, but both her and Tone lacked the dept and complexity of that age level. Tone felt stressed; sad; relieved; embarassed--she was not unordinary or a perplexing character in any sense, and it is those that we learn from. In addition, the plot's high points were few and far between, leaving the reader floating aimlessly admist a sea of nonevent as she (or he, though I couldn't imagine how this book could appeal to a boy) struggled through the novel. I finished it in barely four hours--it was not a challenging read, to say the least.
To a sixth grader or a seventh grader, this book may appease, but it simply wasn't suited for the target age level. The themes were predictable and typical, and I still feel as if little was revealed by the book.
If you're 14 or 15 (or older) reader stuff by Laurie Halse Anderson and John Green.
