Jonah Caine, a lone survivor in a zombie-infested world, struggles to understand the apocalypse in which he lives. Unable to find a moral or sane reason for the horror that surrounds him, he is overwhelmed by violence and insignificance. After wandering for months, Jonah's lonely existence dramatically changes when he discovers a group of survivors. Living in a museum-turned-compound, they are led jointly by Jack, an ever-practical and efficient military man, and Milton, a mysterious, quizzical prophet who holds a strange power over the dead. Both leaders share Jonah's anguish over the brutality of their world, as well as his hope for its beauty. Together with others, they build a community that reestablishes an island of order and humanity surrounded by relentless ghouls. But this newfound peace is short-lived, as Jonah and his band of refugees clash with another group of survivors who remind them that the undead are not the only--nor the most grotesque--horrors they must face.

A great addition to the genre
If you are a zombie fan and your contemplating buying this book just do yourself a favor and buy it. If I known it was going to be this good I would have ordered the sequel at the same time.

A close look at who we are
After I read this book, I've felt that the story follows other famous literatures out there. The story mainly focuses on the dark side of human nature as well as the good side, which are closely articulated in many stories found in Shakespeare and the Christian bible.
The story is symbolic in many ways. The zombies seem to represent our basic, motorize nature without the soul. Whereas at the very bottom of human nature, we're the zombies, but with a conscious mind that allows us to inflict pain onto others with precision - something the zombies cannot do intentionally.
When the story ended, I had a lot of feelings. I felt disgust, anger, depression, and shock - mainly at the brutality others inflict, and the pain and suffering the main characters went through. Then, I felt optimistic at the end, mainly because of the new bond between the characters, and the fact that the main characters might just make it in the crazy new world despite all that they had to endure or going to.
In the end, I felt this book would make a great analysis in a class about philosophy, literature analysis, or even ethics and religion. Sadly, because this book is about zombies, I highly doubt anyone is going to take it seriously other than the few who likes the genre. I must commend the author for making such a great book. It's not just about action, but a question of who we are - a look at the dark side of man.
I got the next book sitting on my desk. I can't wait to start reading that. Hopefully it'll be as good as the first book.
