A modern classic, Einstein’s Dreams is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by Albert Einstein in 1905, when he worked in a patent office in Switzerland. As the defiant but sensitive young genius is creating his theory of relativity, a new conception of time, he imagines many possible worlds. In one, time is circular, so that people are fated to repeat triumphs and failures over and over. In another, there is a place where time stands still, visited by lovers and parents clinging to their children. In another, time is a nightingale, sometimes trapped by a bell jar.
Now translated into thirty languages, Einstein’s Dreams has inspired playwrights, dancers, musicians, and painters all over the world. In poetic vignettes, it explores the connections between science and art, the process of creativity, and ultimately the fragility of human existence.

Confusing, mystical, and great writing This book is a series of vignettes about the many ways that time can be experienced. Its set in a small German town, with streets and shops alongside a placid river. In the vignettes, time will go fast, go slow, stop, stop and start, be continuous. Participants will be in several places at once, in different time dimensions. Its a great little thought piece. Einstein appears almost in cameo, just showing up in several of the vignettes, but not an prominent actor in any of them. From that perspective, its a bit off-putting since, from the title, a reader might expect the great mathematician to play a more prominent role.
But the real treat is the writing. Its very fluid, almost mystical. You can almost feel yourself moving in and out of the scenes, viewing from 50,000 feet, to being in the same room. Worth reading for that alone.
Hoping to see what else the author has written.

One of my all-time favorites This book is one of my all-time favorites. I love the simplicity and beauty of the writing style. Thought-provoking and moving, it is one of the few books I read over and over again, finding and feeling something new each time. A gorgeous book. Highly recommended.

Wonder-Full This is a marvelous collection of fictional dreams that Albert Einstein might have had about time. In his dreams, Einstein imagines worlds where time runs differently, such as backwards or with decreasing entropy, and also fantasizes about worlds in which concepts of time that we perceive to be true are greatly exaggerated, like the relative speed of different people's clocks.
Einstein's Dreams is a fairly short and easy read. Don't worry if you don't have a deep background in physics; this book is meant to be read by anyone who likes to wonder about the marvels of existence. Every chapter is elegantly constructed and left me with a deeper or at least different understanding of reality.
I got a lot out of this book, and reading it was a great way to relax from a hard day's work. I would rate it 5/5, except that I wish the "Interlude" chapters that pop up every so often between dreams, in which the story is told from the 3rd-person about Einstein, were more developed and lead up to something plot-wise.

Know what you are, before you sell yourself A soft beauty & lightness of touch. Works; is good, but done before. Does for time what Calvino does for cities. But lyrics often fail as novels. Only momentum is pages in the hand. Know what you are, before you sell yourself.
