July 2005. In the Pyrenees mountains near Carcassonne, Alice, a volunteer at an archaeological dig, stumbles into a cave and makes a startling discovery-two crumbling skeletons, strange writings on the walls, and the pattern of a labyrinth.
Eight hundred years earlier, on the eve of a brutal crusade that will rip apart southern France, a young woman named Alais is given a ring and a mysterious book for safekeeping by her father. The book, he says, contains the secret of the true Grail, and the ring, inscribed with a labyrinth, will identify a guardian of the Grail. Now, as crusading armies gather outside the city walls of Carcassonne, it will take a tremendous sacrifice to keep the secret of the labyrinth safe.

Heavy Going! In Labyrinth we have two stories, one set in Carcasonne in the 13th century, and another set in modern day, in the same area, involving a discovery in a long abandoned, hidden cave.
This book should have been a cracking adventure, but I found it fairly heavy going, particularly the 'modern day' story. The parts set in the 13th century were interesting, and had more developed characters, and a better story, weaved around true events of the time, but I found myself skimming through parts of the 'modern day' story.
I felt too many weakish characters were introduced in both storylines, which had me backtracking to see who exactly was who, also. Three stars at a push.

A good read, but lacks finesse & smooth continuity Labyrinth is obviously the first "real" novel put out by Kate Mosse. By "real" I mean that it's obviously her first entry that has been widely published. The book is well written, but it stumbles a lot as it goes along & some readers will find it too much work (not in a good way) to keep up with the dual plotlines & multiple characters.
Labyrinth follows two young women from drastically different time periods who are both influenced by a set of three books that have a secret that some are willing to kill and betray for. The book begins with modern day Alice as she uncovers a mysterious chamber that contains two skeletons and a whole lot of mysteries. After that scene is played out we are introduced to Aleis, a young woman who is living in medieval times during the Crusades. The plot then follows both of them as they try to make sense of the actions surrounding and leading them into very distinct futures.
There's really not a lot of surprises in this book. Anything that is meant to be a surprise, you can see coming from a mile away. For the most part much of the suspense fell flat. The plot line was decent & the subject matter (the Grail) is always good for a few hours of entertainment. The female characters though... they were a little annoying at times, mostly for how long it took them to actually do anything. While I can understand that the author wanted to write her heroines as realistic people (and real people don't automatically go into action-thriller-hero mode when put in situations like this), it just didn't really play out that overly well. The end result is that while this book is good for a few hours of entertainment, many will not find it as good as several of the book's counterparts in the field. Still, this is her first book & such stumblings are to be expected. If Mosse can learn from the mistakes made in this book her next ones will definitely become ones to read & remember.
