restoring America
I encourage everyone to read this book no matter what political party you favor. Awesome book, it goes back to the basic principles this country was founded on. The same principles my grand parents said we were losing and warned of a down fall. Basic principles such as less goverment dependence, less taxes, good conservative values and getting away from thinking debt is a good thing. Its time to send the politicians a message before its to late America. Do your research and vote with your morals and conviction that your parents instilled in you. Vote for people who are going to make America a better future not for more hand outs or lining their own pockets.

A Call to Protect Freedom
Herein Senator Jim Demint clasps his hands around his mouth and calls Americans back to the foundations that made the USA great. In "Saving Freedom: We Can Stop America's Slide into Socialism," he urges the reader to contend against the excesses of Big Government as he documents America's slide toward socialism. Some politicians seem to endeavor to take away the rights that the Founding Fathers bequeathed our nation, thus we must take resolute action to overcome those forces with truth, right ideas, and reason.
Senator Demint states: "If we want to secure the best jobs in the future, we must make America the best place in the world to do business."
All freedom-loving citizens should get conversant and remain pro-active in protecting the liberty we so often take for granted before Big Government swallows up all our freedom.
Senator Jim Demint fears socialism coming to America and enlists the reader to fight the good fight for the cause of freedom.
He rightly asserts that "Ideas are more powerful than people."

We need more Jim Demints in DC
Saving Freedom should be required reading for any incoming Congressmen. Too many in DC have forgotten why they are there. It's very interesting hearing his candid story of how he want from business owner with no political experience to being a Congressmen quickly pushed to just fall into line with the others who get there with their main goal being getting re-elected.

Made me think
With the seemingly unitary liberal vision that appears to dominate political discourse these days, it was educational and thought-provoking to read this book-- to ponder just how what we think are solutions to our greatest problems might actually be making the problems worse. I'm glad that I read this book, and its ideas will continue to be in my head, as I begin a self-education in political science that has been long overdue.
Four qualities stand out to me as extremely detrimental for this book: 1) There's a lot of generalized fluff, replete with exclamation marks!, and not a whole lot of detailed evidence to back up many of the claims. It would have been helpful to look at detailed cases from history that really speak to the ravages of big government. 2) What about the many people who don't benefit from capitalism? What happens to them? Demint wants to be compassionate in words alone, and never addresses this very damaging side-effect of capitalism. Likewise, he does not admit that success is always contingent on luck and circumstance, in addition to personal drive and talent. 3) Demint's logic is off on a lot of matters and his belief-set as a whole is inconsistent, particularly- his conclusions are undercut by the delusional premises that are supposed to lead to them. And, his clear belief in objective truth (as opposed to relative truth constructed by culture, etc) makes me cringe. By far, the most damaging: 4) the religious stuff is just nutty. How can you want everyone to have the freedom to build his or her life based on his or her own values, and then extol the Christian values as somehow objectively more right? It's just not true that morality requires religion. Capitalism doesn't require religion either. It's about time someone tells people that personal accountability and a good work ethic have gone down the drain and that their disappearance has had a profoundly negative effect on society. However, let's do this for ourselves and not for a non-existent god.
In sum, cut out the religious garbage, beef up the arguments with non-religious premises garnered from a careful look at history, and this could be a compelling read.
