A Forgotten Classic
In a series of ten radio lectures delivered to a Cuban audience in 1942, right before he died, Capablanca imparts a general theory of his colelcted chess wisdom. These are simple lectures, but everyone may benefit from reviewing the thoughts of this great World Champion. In the Introduction, Capa even says that they're meant for novices but that more experienced players may benefit from the endgame advice. So true: In these lectures, Capa consistently advocates endgame study, sometimes even naming players who he thought had inferior endgame ability. Mixed into the text is other timeless advice. There's the focus on the endgame, but there is also Capa's advice about learning from mistakes, not focusing too much on the opening, and there are even a few middlegame lectures. The longest chapter focuses on basic ideas on the Ruy Lopez. The last lecture is an annotated game against Steiner.
Capa's writing style is lucid and direct. Olga capablanca, in the Preface, even once told Capa, "Do you know, you could have been a wonderful writer. It is so easy for you to write." Capa then goes on to tell Olga that he doesn't even like to write. That fact is testament to Capa's true mastery of chess, and to his ability to take the complicated mechanics of chess strategy and boil it down into a lucid, clear style. He understood his subject matter so well, and was such a good teacher, that even for a man who didn't like to write his prose came out crystal clear. This whole book is an example of Capa's clear thinking and mastery of chess.
