Knowledge creates change
As the author of 4 books on eating and weight--The Rules of "Normal" Eating: A Commonsense Approach for Dieters, Overeaters, Undereaters, Emotional Eaters, and Everyone in Between!, The Food and Feelings Workbook: A Full Course Meal on Emotional Health, Nice Girls Finish Fat: Put Yourself First and Change Your Eating Forever, and What Every Therapist Needs to Know about Treating Eating and Weight Issues --and a psychotherapist treating overeaters for 30-plus years, I want to applaud Dr. Kessler's enlightening but disturbing book. It is well researched and takes a balanced approach to changing eating habits--giving credence to biological causes of overeating, holding the food industry accountable for pushing high sugar/fat/salt foods, and encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their food choices. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles with food.

Interesting, but a bit of an agenda
This book is well researched and well supported; it is one of the few books I've read that does a good job of supporting its claims. I found it interesting to read about how restaurants have changed. I didn't think about this but Dr. Kessler made the astute point that restaurants have really become a form of entertainment. I found it interesting to read about what is in some of those foods and the science behind them.
The later sections were also interesting to see just how difficult it can be do lose weight. Dr. Kessler interviewed a consultant who told him an appetizers was twice what he needed. He also offered suggestions near the end of the books both for individuals trying to lose weight as well as what needs to change in the form of policy.
I don't take issue with any of the evidence per se, but rather some of the conclusions drawn in the book. Dr. Kessler writes about how the rates of obesity has climbed since the 1980's, but remained fairly constant prior. The author has good credentials and many of the statistics have been verified elsewhere. Dr. Kessler makes a compelling argument for environmental factors, but the statistics undercut his argument for much in the way of genetic factors, especially considering how many people are overweight or obese in 2009. If genetics played much of a role the number of overweight/obese people should have remained relatively constant--it's gone up far too quickly.
The only other issue I took was the incessant rant against food industry. I was no supporter of the food industry before reading this book, and definitely am not one now; however, the railings were so many they got repetitive.

the end of over eating
Finally a book that uses science and investigation to explain why it is difficult to lose weight. Understanding the science behind over-eating helped me to change my behavior. This is a great book !
