An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.

Society:When the tires go flat.
One minute you have a family and the next you have two shoes an a lot of ground to cover. Fortunately, they say they have stopped it on Street X, so you want to go there and let someone handle it. The only thing is that people don't seem to handle the undead very well. That's the world we find our main characters in, and one that we find constantly evolving. From friends to betrayals to teethmarks and other wornderful signs that the world is falling apart, we can see what is happening through the eyes of a few people. And we can see how the dead are only part of the problem and how death might be a good thing considering how much strain simply living puts on people. What a world - I wish films covered this topic anywhere near what we get from looking inside a few issues of gathered information.

When this started out, I admit i was skeptical but excited. I had seen a lot of series come and go, and I had seen many with nothing to really offer. Then Waking Dead came along and, now into the 10th edition, I admit I'm hooked. There is the immediate storyline that has me and my need to keep up with what is happening to our group of survivors today, and how many of them might make it out alive. I also like the ever-shifting terrain and the fact that the living have to keep on keeping on in order to live - not to mention to keep from hurting one another. Plus there is the artwork, fantastic stuff, and the atmosphere that leaves the shambling heap of social order in a little bit of a pickle. O, and the zombies - they always look sexy, too.

If you want a story that deals with the dead but explores the world around survivors and zombies alike, then this is a great series. For anyone who has ever picked up a horror story and thought about the love of teeth and betrayal, this will make you happy. It really has few shortcomings, and even those are minor glitches in a much larger pond. I highly recommend this to anyone.

serviceable, juvenile pulp, no more no less
If I were an exacting professor, I'd rate this series 3 stars, but it's getting too many rave reviews - there has to be some recompense. I am admittedly only a sampler of graphic novels, such as the Maus books, Jimmy Corrigan, some of Will Eisner and Daniel Clowes. I read the first three books in "The Walking Dead" series and they probably hold up as a readable series in this genre, but I don't read series work. I can only say that the writing is definitely on the order of pulp fiction, and the situations in the first three books are melodramatic. To understand where I'm coming from, I am a fan of apocalyptic literature and movies; not necessarily zombie. I believe "Earth Abides" and the more recent "The Road" are classics in this subject. Cormac McCarthy's work is especially brilliant in the depth of the written word; its text. But I do like lesser works that are written with a sense of realism and observation, like John Christopher's "No Blade of Grass" or Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Sower." The strongest movies I've seen in this genre of recent years are "28 Days Later" and "Children of Men." With that in mind, I found too much of the story in these Walking Dead books to be plot driven and unrealistic as far as character. As in lesser crime pulp, the action is juicy, but inevitably doesn't move you because CHARACTERS WOULD NOT ACT THIS WAY in real life and too many of the plot coincidences are NOT BELIEVABLE. Examples of this would be in book 1, where the lead cop character just happens to be found by a young man in a zombie-filled Atlanta and brought to his surviving wife and child. The conflict between the two cops over whether to move camp or not feels like a conceit. A group of zombies manifest whenever the story needs action. That's part of the genre, of course, but their appearance and sudden crisis often seem forced. Perhaps it is the way the action scenes are drawn? The release of the "zombies in a barn" in book 2 was especially clunky. A nice set-up, but too sloppy and predictable a crisis. Book 3, set mostly in an abandoned prison felt like an episode of "Oz," with lurid stock criminals and juvenile sexual couplings. I simply can't believe that the main character risked his life and separated from his family for two days to be sure his old buried friend was still dead. Just an action plot idea, I think. It's ridiculous that the cop's wife suddenly wants to spare the prison murderer. He cut the heads off of two little girls. I don't believe the wife lives in our universe. There is a lurking, male comic book mentality driving this world of surprise sex couplings (ok, maybe that's part of the genre fun) and also a cliched, limited view of women as merely serviceable members in these post-apocalypse tribes. Is this part of the new world order the author unabashedly wishes for in his preface in book 1? A zombie movie that never ends and comic book writer's survivalist fantasy?

Consider me hooked!
If you're a fan of zombie lore, post-apocalyptic stories or just comics in general , Volume #1 of "The Walking Dead" is certainly a must buy and I'm still shaking my head in wonderment that I took so long to get started with this series!

Volume #1 is a compilation of the first 6 issues of Robert Kirkman's zombie comics series. The narrative is thrust forward at full speed within the first few pages and the setup of story, setting and characters is about as painless as can be expected for such a sprawling, epic storyline. I also enjoyed the art style utilized in this volume with its seemingly 'flat' standard comic book look meshed in with intricate illustrative background detail and its gloomy black and white tone. My only complaint about this book is the beginning moments of the story which seem cribbed straight from the film, "28 Days Later." If you can look past this one point (as i did) a great comic experience lies ahead!

The Pinnacle of Zombie Stories!
I picked this book up randomly by instinct. I finished it the night I bought it, because It was amazing! Zombie stories usually aren't well done, and my exception is Snyder's Dawn of the Dead. This book, however, surpasses all of them, and now im begging for more blood.

Why is it "amazing"
-Black and White. The artwork and mood of the black and white is unbeatable. If they make a film it has to be the same.
-Rick. Awesome protagonist. I could read his dialogue all day.
-Plot and Characters. The story is very original and offers a thought process from an author who extremely cares for the material. You must read the before notes.
-Pacing. At first I was a little thrown-off by the skipped pieces of time, but they really are self-explanatory. Its more of a collaboration of events, rather than a word for word, second for second story. Beware, because this could turn you off or turn you on. For me it made an intriguing difference that I respected.

I wanted to start a new series. I got really lucky that I found this book. It may have mindless zombies on the cover, but the story is generated from the brain of a genius.
