Susan Beth Pfeffer’s Life as We Knew It enthralled and devastated readers with its brutal but hopeful look at an apocalyptic event--an asteroid hitting the moon, setting off a tailspin of horrific climate changes. Now this harrowing companion novel examines the same events as they unfold in New York City, revealed through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Puerto Rican Alex Morales. When Alex's parents disappear in the aftermath of tidal waves, he must care for his two younger sisters, even as Manhattan becomes a deadly wasteland, and food and aid dwindle. With haunting themes of family, faith, personal change, and courage, this powerful new novel explores how a young man takes on unimaginable responsibilities.

Live or die... whatevs I was excited to find out about this companion book to Life As We Knew It, but when I finally sat down to read it I was sorely disappointed. While the idea to show an urban viewpoint of the moon disaster was a good one, the main character, Alex, was so unbelievably stupid, infuriatingly unresourceful, and intensely unlikable that I didn't care if he lived or died. I highly recommend reading LAWKI, but I would skip this one.

the dead & the gone This is the companion novel for Life as We Knew It...so you don't really have to have read Life as We Knew It but it helps.
the dead & the gone is about a 17 year old boy living in New York City when the moon becomes closer to Earth. And everything changes forever. At the time when it happens his father is away and his mother has to go work at the hospital. So he is left to take care of his two sisters, Bri and Julie.
I love this series, they're intense because you don't know whats going to happen next and their sad. Theres never a dull moment in them.
For those of you who have read Life as We Knew It this is a complete different book than Life as We Knew It and I highly recommend it.

Different take on Life as We Knew It. The companion to Life as We Knew It, these young people dealing with the aftermath of an unexpected natural disaster live in NYC and are a devout Catholic Puerto Rican family. Alex finds himself and his sister alone after the moon causes tides and floods in NYC subway tunnels (probalby killing his mother) and in Puerto Rico where his father is attending his grandmother's funera in the small coastal town where he grew up. Alex must now take care of his two little sisters. The heartwrenching action begins. Another good one by Susan Beth Pfeffer.

A clean thriller for teens How rare is it that a teen thriller is addictively well-written, yet doesn't contain sex, rude language, violent situations or hatred between child and parents?
The Dead and the Gone is a parallel story to Life As We Knew It by the same author (also a good story worth reading). Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. I looked for any excuse to find time to read it.
The situation is this: an asteroid hits the moon and knocks it closer to the earth, recking all sorts of havoc virtually around the world. This is the story about how one teenager, the oldest sibling in the house, copes with the loss of his parents and older brother and does everything he can to get his younger sisters through the crisis.
Although it's not completely realistic, it's near enough to make it exciting. His emotions are honest. The way the family's hope waxes and wanes is honest. The perils, the politics, the place of the church in the disaster are all honest and that's what makes this a book worth reading. It's a book that frightens the bejeebers out of you but leaves you with a desire to continue hoping for the best.
If your teen likes scary stories, this is one book that is terrifying and yet bereft of vampires, long discriptions of blood and gore, unwaranted sex scenes or gratutious violence.
