To say Graphing Calculator isn't doing it justice.
To say that the HP-50g is merely a graphing calculator is not doing justice to its capabilities.
The 50g is nothing less than a programmable microcomputer that does math on the side. On the one
hand this is great for the techo-geek math expert/computer programmer. But, like with the HP-35s,
the barrier to entry is a too little high for the non-expert. On it's own this calculator is great,
especially for engineering or finance professionals who could use all of its functionality.

But for the college calculus, and especially high-school student, it's technicality, I think,
is too much and could easily prove a hindrance when it comes down to exam time. Even though,
in my opinion, this calculator is head and shoulders above the TI-89 when it comes to ability,
and price point (msrp $150 vs $200 for the TI-89), you already have to have a solid algebra and
calculus foundation in order to use this calculator effectively. E.g., it will not simplify
most polynomial equations automatically, and especially power equations such as x^a where a is < 1,
and also it does not simplify to 1/sqrt(x), it will return sqrt(x)/x instead. The calculator also
does not have the CSC, SEC, and COT functions, so you have to use SIN^-1, etc. Also, the different
derivation functions, such as DERIV, DERVX, and d return different results, e.g. DERVX will not do
definite derivatives, while DERIV return the equation unsimplified, etc. So, even though I gave
this 4 stars, my suggestion for the college student who will only take Calc I or II is to purchase
the TI-89. Sure it's a bit more expensive but that extra cost will save you a lot of the headaches
of operating this machine. You have been warned!

No Vista Support...
I purchased the HP 50G as a replacement for my beloved 48SX. Here's what I found:

- There are no Vista drivers, and the drivers it ships with (XP and older OSes) don't work in Vista. This isn't cool, HP - You don't even ship XP anymore. No Vista drivers means it can't be updated to run the latest ROM. It's 2009, HP - Come up with a Vista driver! This also means that I can't use the software that ships with the calc to do backups, screenshots, etc.

- I thought I'd be able to adapt to the location of the enter key, but this turned out to be a much larger issue for me than I originally thought.

- The quality is lacking. It's too wide to be easily hand-held. The battery door rattles. The whole thing sounds and feels like a hollow shell.

- The large display is nice and contrasty, but still no backlight.

- The case makes it twice as large and heavy. Bring back the Nylon cases!!!

- It takes three additional keypresses to enter a complex number in polar notation. To get the angle sign, press Alpha, then release it and press and release the right shift key, then press '6'. The functions to convert polar to rectangular and rectangular to polar are not present, making it very difficult to work with complex numbers. When a complex number is entered in polar notation, it is changed to and stored in rectangular notation. The only way to make it appear in polar notation is to change the mode, which changes the display of every number on the stack.

- The new menu system results in a *lot* more keypresses to do anything. The softkey menu system was great, and I really miss it here.

- I purchased a 2GB SDRAM card to go with this. The calculator isn't able to format the card at all, and produces an error about only recognizing 861MB of the 2GB card.

- I purchased for $109, and I wish I hadn't.
