Works well, easy to set up using WIRED SETUP
Briefly, I had trouble setting it up at first because I just popped the disk in and tried to do wireless setup. No luck. But I immediately looked at the User's Manual, which suggested connecting it with the included ethernet cable directly to the router for setup. It worked like a charm. Then all I had to do was disconnect it, unplug it, then plug it in where I wanted to use it (in a spot that had good wireless reception nearest the area that needed better reception). It has worked well so far. Good Luck.

SETUP A HEADACHE
As others have written, the firmware needs to be downloaded and upgraded. I could not get the extender to work when I tried myself to set it up with the linksys router. I had to spend 2 hrs with two levels of tech support and for this support they charged my credit card $9.90. The extender now works, though the signal, while adequate, is not as strong as I had hoped. Do not buy this gizmo unless you don't mind spending half a day on the phone. One problem I had was that during setup, because the wireless signal was cut off, my laptop, without my realizing it, connected to a neighbor's very weak unprotected signal. We couldn't figure out what had happened. Only the second level tech support picked up on this.

Nightmare to get up and running - looks like it works now
Bought my second WRE54G range expander for home after setting one up over a year ago at my parents' place. Set up that first time was pretty straightforward. (Possibly the router there and the one laptop we needed to reach had software that were good fits).
However, getting this one set up was a complete pain in the neck. I followed the enclosed instructions, couldn't get it to work. I have a WRT54GS v.1 linksys router. The extender is v.3.
I then followed the instructions on the two top-rated posts (basically disabling security, downloading and upgrading firmware, then re-enabling security). However, that process took two hours, primarily because the device wouldn't sync with the network (2 blue lights) long enough to accomplish these objectives. I followed a regimen (mind-numbing sequence) of a) resetting the unit, b) clicking autoconfigure, c) holding autoconfigure, d) unplugging and plugging back in.
I finally opened up the ethernet flap on the unit and hard-cabled it to the router. I have no idea if that is what did the trick, but that did enable me to re-enable the security settings on the extender. Solved, but to me there was little logic to it...as far as I know, I just got lucky.
I then took the extender to its remote location, and it appears to be working, with acceptable speeds.
Virtually all the networking hardware I have is Linksys. However, I would not recommend this product unless you are a pro at this stuff, or don't mind having to potentially spend 3-4 hours getting it set up.

GREAT TRANSACTION. BUYING A REFURBISHED UNIT THRU AMAZON WAS A STROKE OF GENIUS ON MY PART. GREAT SAVINGS OVER BUYING NEW (50%) AND COULDN'T ASK FOR BETTER SERVICE. I USED THE LINKSYS TELEPHONE HELP--LINKSYS AGENT TOOK CONTROL OF MY COMPUTER AND SHE DID ALL THE INSTALLATION AND UNIT SET UP BY REMOTE CONTROL. FROM THE PHILIPINES NO LESS!!!! BEST $10 I HAVE EVER SPENT. UNIT DOES EVERYTHING AS ADVERTISED.
