Linksys by Cisco WRT160NL Wireless-N Broadband Router with Storage Link (Compatible with Linux)

Publisher: Linksys
Type: Electronics

The Wireless-N Broadband Router with Storage Link is really four devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. The Storage Link feature lets you connect a hard drive or flash-based USB storage device directly to your network to easily add gigabytes of storage. Access your music, video, or data files from anywhere within your network. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

Good router, apart from the storage link
I bought this router primarily for the wireless n connectivity, to improve wireless connectivity on our lil home network. Easy setup. WPA2 security was very easy on the Vista and Win7 computers connecting. One older WinXP computer was more difficult to connect, but not as much so as on an older Netgear WPN824 b/g router. (And when I upgraded the XP computer to Win7--easy=peasy connectivity.)

The browser-accessible management console is clear and relatively powerful. Good work there, Linksys.

The storage link? I've read all the Linksys documentation, spent more time than I care to think of on the Linksys forum and help pages and followed directions very carefully but still cannot access an attached storage device from computers on the network. If you're looking at this router for that feature, you may want to consider moving along. As Obi Wan Kenobi might say, "This is not the router you are seeking." If, however, you are simply looking for a good wireless n router, this _is_ the router you are seeking.

Terrible router. An abortion.
It is absolutely absurd that it has been so many years since 802.11g first became the standard and I feel that with this Draft-N router we have actually taken a step backward. To sum it up, here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
Looks really slick with its glossy black form-factor design.

Cons:
Doesn't work as a router.

I have had a lot of luck in the past with my trusty Linksys wrt54g router. It's a disgusting blocky blue box but it is solid and trustworthy.

After installing this Linksys wrt160nl router, that process in itself a hassle, I configured it to run in mixed mode since not all of my devices are 802.11 draft-N compliant.

Comparing the two routers with a speed test ([...]), I found that the connection was even slower than my wrt160nl router. I also recently purchased a wireless printer to which my three computers (running Mac OS X, XP, and Vista) can connect via the router. The printer would constantly lose its connection because the router wasn't properly forwarding the packets.

When I tried to ping the computers on the network from the other computers, there was intermittent packet loss. File sharing was also intermittent, as was my connection to the Internet, which was in some cases lost entirely.

Tried connecting with an XBox 360 from the other room. It consistently did not connect. Tried boosting the channel width and saw no clear advantages.

As a computer professional, I am always disappointed when things don't work properly and there is no reasonable way to fix them. I don't know how Cisco managed to completely ruin Linksys' once decent router after Cisco took over Linksys, but it was a job well done.

I may try to contact Cisco and ask if there's a use for this thing other than a glossy black paperweight and try to get any speed boost I can out of it, since this was given to me for free to begin with. But I really don't recommend buying this thing unless you're a masochist. A router should just work. Maybe now that the 802.11n standard has been approved (again, this is a DRAFT-n router), you'll start seeing companies fall in line and update their firmware or build better routers. Until then, I'd give 2002 a call and see if they have any of the working routers left.

Does not live up to spec
The router has been a disappointment. I had always used and recommended Linksys routers in the past. This was because of their enhanced security with MAC address filtering that other products lack. I have had 2 WRT54G in the past and recommend that unit to others. I helped them setup so I know they worked well. However, this WRT160NL I purchased for the N router capability. Speed is actually slower than on my old WRT54G. Also I wanted the NL because it supports a USB connection for a USB hard drive. Connections on the wireless drop. Connections to a hard wired PC drop. And connections to the hard disk are slow and also drop. My old SLUG works better than the support for the USB drive on the router.
Worse yet is usually their is support from the community for firmware upgrades. There seems to be no user support for this product.

Much better than my previous routers
I have had some experience with previous wireless routers and this one is much better. The signal is excellent all
over my place (250 square meters). It may be due to the new technology (N) but, in any case, it is good value for money.
