This exam counts as a stand alone certification:

Or, it can be used towards the larger MCITP certifications:

  • Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP): Enterprise Administrator
  • Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP): Server Administrator

What experience should you have before taking the 70-642 exam?

Candidates should have worked in a complex computing environment for a medium to large sized company. In addition to this, candidates should meet the following; have worked with 250 to 5000 users, 3 or more physical locations, 3 or more domain controllers, network services including databases, file and print, proxy server, firewall, internet and client computer management.

Where can I take the exam?

This exam is available through the Prometric testing centres, which are located throughout the world. Simply use their website to create your account, schedule your exam and pay the fee online. The exam fee in the UK is around the £90 mark, but may vary in each country. You’ll also be pleased to know that some exam centres are open at the weekend, which gives you a chance to take you exam outside of your working week!

What about MCSE and MCSA?

The MCSE and MCSA examinations are still active and taken by millions of candidates around the world. These exams focus on the Server 2000 and Server 2003 infrastructures. Microsoft have now changed the direction of most of their certifications towards the new MCTS and MCITP certification paths. If you do hold a MCSA or MCSE certification, don’t worry, you can easily upgrade your skills to the new MCTS or MCITP with an upgrade exam. The MCITP Certification


This exam is part of the MCITP Server Administrator certification path. Candidates wanting to earn this certification must be able to demonstrate leadership, competence and problem solving skills working with the latest Microsoft Windows Server 2008 technologies.

Individuals studying for the MCITP cert can push their career path towards any of the following roles:
  • Windows server administrator
  • Server admin and systems admin
  • Monitoring operator or consultant
  • Network administrator

What experience should you poses?


You should have experience in the following areas:

  • Handling day-to-day management of server operating systems, file structure and directory services
  • Responsible for software distribution and rollouts
  • Monitoring servers and ensuring reliability and uptime
  • Creating new builds and configuring he server
  • Controlling and implementing an auditing policy
  • Monitoring logs for firewalls and intrusion detection systems
