SharePoint Feature Explorer
User Guide
All of the features of Feature Explorer are self explanatory, but we have included the core functions below..
Starting Sharepoint Feature Explorer
1. Run the aiFeatureExplorer.exe file or use the Shortcut (depending on your chosen installation method)
2. Enter your SharePoint server name in the top left hand textbox and click the Load button.
3. Sharepoint Feature Explorer will load all Sites and Webs from your SharePoint server. The Server Farm will be shown at the top of the TreeView.
Browsing Features
1. Clicking on an object in the Treeview will refresh the Feature grid on the right. If the selected node from the TreeView is the Farm node, then you will be able to install and uninstall features. Other nodes such as Sites and Webs allow you to activate and deactivate features.
Browsing Farm, Site or Web Properties
Sharepoint Feature Explorer allows you to inspect all the public properties of any of your SharePoint Sites and Webs, and also your Farm.
1. Click on the node in the TreeView and select the Details tab on the right.
2. This section does not automatically refresh so you’ll need to click the Refresh button.
3. After refreshing (this can take a few seconds) all the SharePoint public properties for the selected object will be shown in the properties grid. As with the usual Visual Studio property grid, you can explorer properties in detail. So, for example, if you click on the Lists property item, you can explorer all the elements in the Sharepoint Lists library
Activating a SharePoint Feature
Sharepoint Feature Explorer allows you to activate (and deactivate) features without having use the slow and painful stsadm command line tool. You will only be able to activate features that lie at the Site or Web scope. Farm features can be installed or uninstalled but not activated or deactivated.
1. Select the type of object you want to activate a feature for, Site or Web, from the TreeView on the left hand side.
2. The list of activated features will appear on the right hand side in the grid.
3. Use the right hand mouse button to bring up the context menu for the grid.
4. Select Activate a New Feature from the menu.
5. A new popup windows will appear. From here you can select any of the Features which are available to SharePoint (the ones which are stored in the 12 Hive of the SharePoint installation). The 12 hive is the usual place where all SharePoint feature files are copied before installation and activation.
6. Select a feature from the popup window and choose Ok. SharePoint Feature Explorer will attempt to activate the feature on the select Site or Web.
7. A confirmation message will appear after the new Feature has been activate.
You can now browse to the Site or Web, and use the new feature.
Deactivating a SharePoint Feature
The same principle applies when deactivating a SharePoint Feature using SharePoint Feature Explorer.
1. Use the Treeview on the left hand side to select the object you want to deactivate the feature on, Site or Web.
2. Once selected, the list of features will be shown in the grid.
3. Use the context menu to select the Deactivate Selected Features option.
As you can guess, its possible to deactivate multiple features all at once. A confirmation message will appear when the features have been deactivated successfully.
Viewing Feature Dependencies
Using SharePoint Feature Explorer, you can view the activation dependencies for all SharePoint Features. Only some features have dependencies.
1. Select the Feature from the feature grid on the right hand side of Feature Explorer.
2. Use the content menu (right mouse click) and select View Dependencies from the menu list.
3. This will open a new windows showing all the dependences for the selected Feature.
Not all features have dependencies, but you will be able to spot the ones that do by looking at the Dependencies column of the features Grid.
Opening Feature Folder
Its easy to view the Feature folder for a selected feature. Just use the context menu and choose Open Feature Folder. This will launch a windows explorer window showing the folder for the selected Feature.
Opening Feature Definition File
Each feature installed in SharePoint has a corresponding feature definition file Feature.xml. This definition xml file contains the properties for each feature including:
Id, Title, Description, ImageUrl, Scope, Resources File and Activation dependencies
Using SharePoint Feature Explorer its easy to view Feature Definition files. Simply select the feature in the feature grid, right click and choose Open Feature Definition File. The definition file will open in notepad.
Viewing the Solution of a Feature
Most developers will deploy features as part of a larger Solution to save time. SharePoint Feature Explorer allows you to view all the SharePoint Solution properties for any feature.
Simply select the Feature from the Features grid, right click and select View Solution from the context menu. A new window will open showing all the features of the Solution. This is a really handy way of determining which solution is associated with which feature.
Install a New Feature
Installed a new feature with SharePoint Feature Explorer is easy. Just browse to the Farm node on the Treeview (left hand side). The feature grid on the right will refresh showing all the installed features. Unlike the Sites and Webs, this list is just for installed features.
You can install and uninstall features as you wish from here. Simply, select the feature from the grid, right click and select Install or Uninstall from the context menu.
Using this procedure you can save time by not having to open a command prompt and type in the stsadm parameters. SharePoint Feature Explorer does use stsadm in the background, so remember not to close the command prompt whilst an install or uninstall operation is in progress.
Searching for features
Searching for SharePoint Features is a powerful tool provided by SharePoint Feature Explorer. You can search for Features by Name or Guid. The search results will show you which Farm, Sites or Webs are using the feature. You can then browse these sites by using the built in context menu and selecting Browse.
To search for features, click the Search button located in the top right comer of the application. This launches a new window where you can enter your SharePoint queries to search for installed and activated Features.
All features found are shown in the results grid. Information such as Feature Guid, Name, Url, Scope and Status are shown.
