The Forest v0.13 Features - Climbing Ropes and Trading

Posted in the forest

While we await the arrival of The Forest on PS4, the devs have produced another sizable update in the shape of v0.13 for the PC. This patch includes a large number of bug fixes with a fair number of new additions thrown in.

Amongst the collection of new features, there are new buildables for storing explosives, snacks and another for safely stowing medicine away. A new weapon rack makes its first appearance, allowing you to store your non-projectile weapons i.e axes and clubs. There's also a new climbing rope buildable that allows players to climb onto any man-made structures such as log cabins, staircases and walls.

I'll discuss each of the major additions below...

Climbing rope

Climbing rope

One of the significant additions in v0.13, the Climbing rope is as the name suggests a way to climb from lower ground to higher ground. Similar to the grapple hook in Far Cry 4, the climbing rope can only be used with Anchor Points (which the devs call Structure Anchors). These anchor points come attached to many of the structures you build in the game including:

  • Gazebo
  • Log Cabin
  • Platform
  • Extensible Platform
  • Staircase
  • Wall

Climbing ropes are a good way to add a fast access point to your base, especially if you're running away from enemies.

When you're attempting to place the climbing rope look for the little grey Anchor symbol as shown on the image above. These Anchor Points cannot be found on trees, caves or other natural structures. To complete the build you need to have rope in your inventory.

Once built, you can scale any structure by climbing the rope, as shown in the image below:

Weapons Rack

Four new structures make their appearance in v0.13. All of these are used to store various inventory items for safe keeping. They include storage types for melee weapons, explosives, snacks and finally one for medicine.

Once built, the storage containers can be used by pressing the C key to interact with them. For example, walking up to the weapon rack and pressing C on the keyboard will automatically move your active weapon from your hand to the rack.

In multiplayer, these storage containers are accessible to every player so you can trade items with each other. More of an exchange than a real trade though. Once items are placed on the holders, other players can clearly see what's on the holder should they wish to grab it for themselves.

Other significant changes

Improvements to multiplayer
Particularly noticeable on the performance side with the microphone now consuming far less CPU power than before.

Trading
Players can trade items by using one of the new buildable racks.

Blocking
Block will now fail when you have very low stamina. So when that bar gets really low you're in big trouble so just run!!

Chopping up bodies
Players can chop enemies into smaller pieces. Enemies will no longer explode.

Dead Cave Expanded
The largest cave in the game is now even larger with new areas to discover.

Camera Shake
The camera view now shakes when bombs explode, scaled by your distance from the explosion.

Armsy Enrage

The octopus like creature called 'Armsy' now has an enrage state, which is triggered by the player setting him on fire. Molotov damage has also been reduced against this foe.

New cheats added

Cheats are used at the title screen by simply typing in a particular code.

  • vegetarianmode - enemies will only appear at night.
  • meatmode - cancels all other cheats.
