Do I have to put the assembly in the GAC?

1/9/2007

No, it is a popular misconception is that assemblies should always be installed in the GAC. Some developers choose to put strongly-named assemblies under the application directory to ensure the application has no system-wide impact, and to make sure that it can be XCOPY deployed.

This also ensures that the assembly remains private to the application only (this is more of a concern for licensed components but ours are free for all users and is not a problem)
