Red Dead Redemption 2 - How to Unlock New Outfits

Posted in rdr2

One of the best parts of Red Dead Redemption 2 is tailoring the appearance of your character using outfits. In this guide I'm going to cover how to unlock new outfits and where to find the Trapper for crafting new clothes.

Throughout the world of RDR2 there are many towns, each with their own community and shops. These can vary from General Stores to Butchers, Tailors and Gunsmiths. Whilst General Stores and Tailors do offer some clothing choices, they aren't the best place for a wide and unique variety. Instead, you'll want to find the Trapper - a specialised trader that allows you to exchange animal parts (with a little cash) for new clothing items such as Chaps, Gloves, Coats, Hats and other garments.

Where to find the Trapper

Trapper locations on the world map

The Trapper has a primary location in RDR2 - on the far eastern side of Saint Denis (see image above). However, he also has four locations out in the wild. The map above shows each of the locations which are:

  1. Saint Denis - eastern side of the town
  2. Annesburg - west of Elysian pool
  3. West Elizabeth - eastern side, north east of Riggs Station
  4. West Elizabeth - far western edge, north west of Owanjila lake
  5. West Elizabeth - far south of the region, northern side of Lower Montana River

If you're looking for the Trapper out in the wild, he appears as a little wooden shack. See image below:

Example of the Trapper in the wild

Once you've found the Trapper, simply interact and then open the crafting menu to see which new clothing accessories can be made. There are menu options for Garment Sets, Clothing, Reinforced Equipment, Saddles and Items.

In almost all cases, you'll need one or more "Perfect" animal parts to craft a new clothing item. See the animal quality for details on how to get "Perfect" pelt, skin and hide.

Clothing from the Trapper is named appropriate to the type of animal it's made from. For example, Bear Batwing Chaps are made from Perfect Bear Pelt and Elk Gloves are made from Elk Pelt. Other better clothing items, such as Legendary White Bison Hat, are made from Legendary animal parts which you'll find by hunting down very rare versions of those animals. See the legendary animal locations guide for details on finding these.

Honor related outfit unlocks

Some of the games outfits are locked behind your Honor rating: based on whether you're playing as a moral person or not. Saving people, completing camp chores and donating to the camp will help increase your Honor. See the Honor guide for details on how to increase or decrease your Honor.

Secret end-game outfits

Legend of the East outfit

One the end-game outfits in Red Dead Redemption 2 is called the "Legend of the East" and is acquired for completing a pretty insurmountable task. Not only does the outfit look amazing but it comes with a nice range of permanent perks when worn. This outfit is a timely reminder to the secret outfit from the original game which was called "Legend of the West".
