No remaster would be complete without some tasty unlocks and new Easter Eggs. Long time fans will be pleased to know that the N Sane Trilogy is no different, containing many secrets such as Fake Crash appearances, Uncharted references, Speed Boot rewards and many others.
Below you'll find a list of the most notable unlocks and Easter Eggs in the PS4 game, with new additions added as they're discovered. These secrets are spread across each of the three games: Crash Bandicoot 1, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back and Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped.
Fake Crash
Successfully collecting all of the gems in Crash Bandicoot 1 and beating Dr Cortex will of course give you the 100% achievement ending. In addition to this, the infamous "Fake Crash" character makes an appearance in the game's first level, "N Sanity Beach".
Simply enter the time trial mode (by picking up the yellow clock at the start of the level) as you attempt to earn the Relic. As you ascend the first set of stone steps, take note of Fake Crash on the left side of the screen. He's harmlessly dancing to Crash's victory routine on one of the steps. See image above for exact location.
For new players, Fake Crash, also known as Trash Bandicoot, was inspired by cheap Japanese toys that tried to rip off the Crash Bandicoot character after the games original success. He is a poor imitation of Crash, typically with larger teeth, larger eyebrows and other defects.
Naughty Dog originally added the "Fake Crash" Easter Egg to three of the levels on Crash Bandicoot 3 but he has never (until now) appeared in the original game for obvious chronological reasons.
Speed Boots Reward for Crash 2
The original Crash Bandicoot 3 game title "Warped" was well known for giving players additional perks following each of the BOSS fights. These including double jump, extra spin and of course the well known Speed Boots for completing the final BOSS fight.
What's noticeable about the N Sane Trilogy is that the Speed Boots are also a reward for completing the second game "Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back". These are particularly useful for revisiting the CB2 levels to earn the new Relic time trials, which of course demand great skill and speed.
Uncharted Easter Eggs
Given that Naughty Dog are widely known for creating the legendary "Uncharted" series for the Playstation it was a fitting tribute to learn that Vicarious Visions have included several Uncharted Easter Eggs in the N Sane Trilogy.
Coco Laptop
Watch the Crash Bandicoot 2 intro cutscene carefully and you'll notice that Coco is watching something interesting on her laptop. It is in fact Nathan Drake playing Crash Bandicoot from Uncharted 4.
Nathan Drake Photo
Hidden in the Crash Bandicoot 3 intro cutscene is another reference to the Uncharted series. Watch carefully as Aku Aku talks to Crash, Coco and the Polar bear in the living room. Just beside the fireplace is a table with flowers and a photo frame contain a black and white photo of Nathan Drake.
Tiny Tiger BOSS fight cheese
Tiny Tiger is of course one of the well known BOSS characters in Crash Bandicoot who makes an appearance in both Crash 2 and Crash 3. During the Crash 3 fight, the player has to evade a horde of lions as they come steaming through the doors of the coliseum.
The original Crash 3 game had a lovely “cheese” spot that allowed the player to stand completely still and never get hurt by the rampaging lions. Existing well before the days of patches or DLC, the “cheese” was never fixed.
Come the N Sane Trilogy and this cheese has now been fixed along with a simple Easter Egg to highlight its legacy. During the rampaging lions part of the BOSS fight, stand in the top left hand corner of the arena. You won’t be invulnerable like in the original game but you will see the cheering crowd throw great chunks of “cheese” at you!
