Titanfall - What are the Best Titan Weapons?
Posted in
titanfall
The release day version of Titanfall comes with 6 Titan weapons and eveyones keen to know which of those weapons is the best. Although some of Titan weapons sound fantastic, there's only a couple that are really worth considering. Here's a list of all the weapons, describing pros and cons of each and then I single out the best Titan weapon.
40MM Cannon
The factory issue 40MM Cannon is the first on the list of Titan weapons but don't let fool you. It's probably the best Titan weapon to use at a lower level/rank. It's high damage rating and still relatively good fire rate means that a very mobile enemy can be picked off with the Cannon. It's also fine for killing minions and other pilots in the surrounding areas.
It may not pack the punch of the Arc Cannon or Plasma Rail but as you'll learn below, it's faster fire rate is far more important in the fast paced Titan fights.
Quad Rocket
The factory issue Quad Rocket fires 4 rockets in its primary mode or a swirl of rockets in its secondary mode. Either way, the Quad Rocket is only effective up close because of its lack of accuracy. If you can get up close then unleashing a barrage of rockets certainly deals a hefty amount of damage.
The Quad Rocket is also very effective when it comes to taking down the enemy drop ship. You'll find that a target that doesn't move is easily destroyed with rockets. It's also good for fighting closely packed groups of Titans where accuracy doesn't matter as much.
One thing I would say is that completing the Quad Rocket challenges will unlock the Rapid Fire upgrade which is certainly worth pursuing. The Rapid Fire upgrade basically changes the cannon into a single fire weapon but with a very fast fire rate. The rockets loose some of their potency with this upgrade too but you can go ballistic and launch an intense barrage of rockets with great accuracy. Very powerful and quite unstoppable.
Video showing Quad Rocket with Rapid Fire upgradeOverall, I wouldn't choose the factory issue Quad Rocket over the 40MM Cannon though.
XO16 Chaingun
On paper the Chaingun sounds like a solid weapon but in fact it's more reliable for taking out pilots and minions than enemy Titans. You need a concerted amount of continuous fire to deal the same damage to a Titan as say the 40MM Cannon can do in a few shots.
That said, if you're fighting in a group of Titans (which you should), having a player with a Chaingun can help prevent pilot rocket attacks or rodeos attempts. It's also fine for "pray and spray" moments when you yourself are almost doomed and so is the enemy Titan.
Plasma Railgun
What a disappointing gun this is. Highly inaccurate with a charge time that's so slow you're dead before you can unleash its full power. Even a fully charged shot will only take out a small fraction of a shield anyway.
Although it's one of the first Titan weapons you'll unlock, compared to other weapons the Plasma Railgun is really awful. Give it a try if you want but don't depend on it too much.
Arc Cannon
Again, another weapon that sounds great on paper. "Arc Cannon fires a bold of lightning that propagates across multiple targets". What they don't say is how dam ineffective it is. It's not as bad as the Plasma Railgun because there's no need to aim down the sights but the same accuracy principle applies - every missed shot is going to cost you time and damage. That other Titan might be on his last legs but you've got to take a pin point shot to finish him off. Combine that with the fact that everyone loves to shift side to side and the Arc Cannon really becomes a chore.
It's not all doom and gloom for the Arc Cannon. When used against a bunch of Titans, especially huddled together, the Arc Cannon gives you a chance to be less precise and deal some severe damage to one of the group's members. If used intelligently the Arc Cannon still has a place in one of your custom Titan loadouts.
Triple Threat
So we come to the end of the Titan weapon list and it's the Triple Threat - "A grenade launcher that fires three grenades at once". Don't be fooled into comparing this to a grenade launcher from COD, the Triple Threat is one of the best Titan weapons in Titanfall.
Although Respawn describe the Triple Threat as "a weapon for clearing out interiors", it's grenades have the lovely ability to explode on impact with armour. Therefore, there's no wait time for those grenades to explode, they're going to hit and strike instantly against other Titans. Essentially what that means is you've got a chance to hit the Titan's directly, but even if you miss those grenades are going to roll around on the floor and explode anyway!
Despite the poor range of this weapon, it's surprising just how OP the Triple Threat is. Grenades can be shot round corners, through windows and over ledges. You can take comfort away from the direct fight and bombard enemy Titans with a levy of grenades, and if used against groups it's a great way to rack up the Titan kills.
What's more, those grenades are just as deadly against pilots as they are against Titans, thus making the Triple Threat your number one choice. The huge downside is that it's unlocked at level 28!!
