Google Wave is the new online tool for real-time communication and collaboration. Many are classing the new Google tool as the next generation of internet communication. This is largely due to its unique combination of e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking in a smooth and slick application. Google explains that a wave can be both a conversation and a document where people can discuss and worth together using rich text, photos, videos, maps and many other features.
The beauty of Google Wave lets participants reply anywhere in the message, edit the content such as photos or documents, and even add other participants to the conversation at any time. The wave can also be recorded for others to playback and see who said what and when. As with other forms off online sharing, the Google Wave transmits information via a live transmission channel. As participants type, the wave is updated in real time ensuring fast conversations, edits and interactivity. Its almost as if you’re in the same room as the person, no lag or annoying delays.
Google Wave is a new software application and its current release includes features for:
Real-time collaboration – real time editing of documents and conversations
Playback – play back waves to see participants responses and interactivity
Sharing – download and share files collectively
Photo/Video sharing – edit and share photos in real time
Natural language tools – spelling and contextual suggestions using a real time server-based model
Extensibility – embed your waves into your website or into live social gadgets
Written in Java using the OpenJDK, Google wave provides an open interface for developers to enhance the tool in many different ways. 3rd party developers can extend the tool to create even more interactively and collaboration. Some of the current extensions include:
Sudoku puzzles by LabPixies
Telephone conference calls using Google Wave via Ribbit
6 rounds – enjoy collaboration, real time videos, chat experience, share videos and games
Lonely Planet – co-create itinerary, points of interest, recommendations
AccuWeather – the perfect companion for trip planning
Google Wave is currently available via invitation only, by either submitting your email address to the waiting list, or by being invited by an existing Google Wave user. This is known as a Google Wave Invitation. Existing Wave users can invite up to 8 people to join the program. Google is looking for more people to join the program before the official Google Wave launch in late 2009. Invited users are often asked to provide feedback including bugs and taking surveys to improve the application.
