Deus Ex Mankind Divided - How to Get Inside the Bookstore

One of the early missions in Mankind Divided called "Morning Comes too Soon" requires you to get inside the Bookstore and speak with your friend Koller. He's the augmentation specialist who can help restore all of your aug powers and set you on your way. The problem is, he's trapped from all sides by a thug force and a rather annoying police presence.

In this guide I'll help you get past one of the games early stumbling points, which for new players can be quite frustrating. As you may have heard, there are multiple ways to solve the same problem in Deus Ex and in this guide I'll show the wrong way to go about this and the quick and easy path.

First up, let's explore the wrong ways.

Underground Sewer - Wrong path

Taking a quick peek at the map reveals several key markers, one of which is a yellow ladder marker. If you hover all some of these, they are entitled Sewer, which as you might have guessed takes you underground to the sewer system.

I spent a good 30 minutes exploring the sewer system, thinking that the route to the bookstore was through the sewer and then popping back up inside the bookstore. Although this does uncover a rather odd character and a strange cult (no more spoilers here), the sewer isn't a good choice for getting to the bookstore.

Getting an ID card - Wrong path

One the main street paths around the side of the bookstore is blocked by the police presence in the area. Speaking with the main police officer reveals that he is willing to accept a "fake" ID card so long as you speak to his colleague and pay up.

This opens a new Side Quest called "The Golden Ticket" that requires you to either convince or sneak past some thugs, then acquire a security ID. Whilst you can opt for this route, I found that it didn't help much and I suggest taking the path below instead.

Sneaking past the police - Fast route

The easiest and best way to get inside the Bookstore is to understand that Deus Ex loves puzzles, especially exploratory puzzles involving vent shafts, rooftops, ladders etc. In many ways it's exactly like Metal Gear Solid and in this particular mission, circumventing the police force and sneaking past the thugs is the best way to get moving.

So where should you start? Go to the police cordon where the NPC is (just before the restricted area). Back up a little so you're outside of the second archway. Look up and read the poster above the archway which has capital letters that say "NOT HERE". This is your starting point:

Look to the right of the archway and spot the metal fence (railing). Stand in front of it and press X (on PS4) to climb on top of it. Jump up again and you should be on top of the archway.



Turn left and walk along to the end. Turn right and spot the electric box on the wall. Jump onto this and then jump again to reach the second ledge before a final jump takes you to the balcony, see image below:



Go through the window and into the small room which contains a softa, sink etc. Take note of the grill (vent shaft) on your immediate right, above the sink. Rip it off and crouch through the pipes until you come to the rooftop.

Stay on the roof and avoid detection. Now head round the right of the rooftop and drop down behind the car and next to the keypad:



Hack the keypad and gain entrance to the room. You're now into the bottom section of the bookstore and it's just a case of working your way upstairs and into the secret room to find Koller.
