Dying Light - Crafting and Blueprints Guide

Crafting is a core concept in Dying Light and something which you can't avoid if you want to improve your survival skills. You'll have noticed that the game is rather unforgiving (there is no easy mode) so crafting and upgrading equipment is something you need to do. In this post I'll cover the craftable items in the game including a tutorial and the exact items needed for each recipe.

At the beginning of the game you'll have an empty "palette" with little or no items on your side. As you play the game you'll earn skill points which help you unlock certain crafting recipes (blueprints). You'll also earn Blueprints as rewards for completing Quests.

Craft parts are typically scattered around the map, particularly on dead zombies, in chests, safe houses and inside shops. Hunting at night might be the most dangerous but it's actually the most rewarding too. In addition to finding rare materials and items at night, you'll also earn double points to help you progress your skill trees at a faster rate.

Zombies known as Bolters drop a high value item called Bolter Tissue which can be traded or used in special poisons. These enemies only appear at night but thankfully your radar shows their position.

Every Blueprint in the game details the Components (crafting items or parts) required to make that item. You can see a list of all your Blueprints under the Blueprints menu.

Here's a list of all the Blueprints in Dying Light and the components required for each of them. I'll update the list as more Blueprints are discovered:

Throwing weapons

  • Throwing Stars - unlocked through the skill tree. Requires: 1 x Metal, 1 x String.
  • Molotov - flaming bomb. Requires: 1 x Alcohol, 1 x Gauze, 1 x String.
  • Burning Throwing Stars - Requires: 1 x Metal, 1 x String, 1 x Aerosol.
  • Exploding Throwing Stars - Requires: 1 x Metal, 1 x Gauze, 1 x Chemicals.
  • Freezing Throwing Stars - Requires: 1 x Metal, 1 x Underwater Algae, 1 x Common Plant, 1 x Fluorescent Mushrooms
  • Freezing grenades - skill unlock. Requires: 1 x Common Plant, 1 x Tin Can, 1 x Fluorescent Mushrooms
  • Shrapnel Grenades - unlocked via skill, effective against groups. Requires: 1 x Nails, 1 x Chemicals, 1 x Kitchen Stuff, 1 x Tin Can
  • Shrapnel Trap Bombs - similar to the grenades but manually triggered. Skill unlock. Requires: 1 x Plastic, 1 x Chemicals, 1 x Kitchen Stuff, 1 x Nails
  • Toxic Grenades - skill unlock. Deal damage over time. Requires: 2 x Kitchen Stuff, 1 x Tin Can, 1 x Toxic Lichen
  • Toxic Trap Bomb - skill unlock. Requires: 1 x Plastic, 1 x Chemicals, 1 x Kitchen Stuff, 1 x Toxic Lichen


Weapons

These weapon Blueprints provide mods for your weapons. Some can be gained from side quests whilst others must be scavenged from the map. I'll try and create maps for all the locations, some are shown below. The yellow star shows the location of the Blueprint:

  • 230V - adds electricity to weapons. Requires: Base weapon, 1 x Metal Parts, 1 x Duct Tape, 1 x Plastic, 1 x Battery, 1 x Power Cable.
  • Airport Security - adds electricity (level 2)
  • All in one - adds Electricity (Level 2), Toxic (Level 2)
  • All purpose toxic striker - adds Toxic (Level 1) to melee weapons. Can be purchased from upper tower store.
  • Angel Sword - adds Electricity (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to blades and swords. Gained from side quest "Slay the Troll".
  • Assassin - increases the handling speed for weapons. You swing faster and use less stamina.
  • Bad Ass - adds Impact (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to some swords, blades and clevers.
  • Bad Hangover - adds Bleeding (Level 2), Toxic (Level 2) to wrench, hammer and pick.
  • Barbershop - adds Bleeding (Level 2) to some knives, clever and shovel.
  • Ben Franklins Key - adds Electricity (Level 1) to melee. Purchasable from Upper Tower store.
  • Berserker
  • Champion - improves all your weapon statistics
  • Cloud9 - adds Toxic (Level 2) to two handed axe, pick and hammer.
  • Cut n Go - adds Impact (Level 2) to several blades, clever and two handed sword.
  • Dentist - adds Toxic (Level 2) to crowbar. Blueprint found in slums.
  • Electrician - adds Electrician (Level 2) to wrench and small hammer. Gained from side quest.
  • Electicutter - adds Bleeding (Level 2), Electricity (Level 2) to short and long knife. Found in slums.
  • Electrocutioner - adds Electricity (Level 2) to various two handed weapons. Found in Old Town.
  • Fastball Special - adds Impact (Level 1) to melee. Purchasable from stores after reaching survivor level 7.
  • Filthy Blade - adds Bleeding (Level 2), Toxic (Level 2) to long and short knife.
  • Fire Launcher - adds Impact (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to various weapons including baseball bat and crowbar. Gained from Escort side quest.
  • Flame Blade - adds Burning (Level 2) to swords and machete. Found in Old Town.
  • Flap Cap - adds Bleeding (Level 2) to swords, machete and sickles.
  • Get Medieval - adds Bleeding (Level 2) to axes and pickaxe. Found in Old Town.
  • Glowing Stick - adds Electricity (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to pipe, police baton and crowbar.
  • God Hammer - adds Electricity (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to various hammers and axes. Found in Slums.
  • Grill'em and Kill'em - adds Electricity (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to wrench, shovel, sickle.
  • GTFO - adds Impact (Level 2) to long and short knife.
  • GTFO 2 - adds Impact (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to long and short knife. Gained in Escort mission (fishing spot)
  • Heavy Welder - adds Burning (Level 2) to two handed hammer, axe and pickaxe. Found in Slums.
  • Holy Ghost - adds Bleeding (Level 2), Electricity (Level 2) to various weapons. Gained in side quest Escort.
  • Home-run - adds Impact (Level 2) to various weapons. Found in Slums.
  • Industrial-Grade Leech - adds bleeding to any melee weapon causing damage over time. Requires: 1 x Metal Parts, 1 x Nails, 1 x Blade.
  • Pocket Lighter - adds Burning (Level 2) to long and short knife. Found in Slums.
  • Poison Blast - adds Bleeding (Level 2), Toxic (Level 2) to two handed axe and hammers. Found in Old Town.
  • Poison Pen - adds Toxic (Level 2) to police baton. Found in Slums.
  • Poison Strapon - adds Toxic (Level 2) to swords and machete. Found in Old Town.
  • Puff Puff Pass - adds Toxic (Level 2) to wrench, hammer and sickle. Gained from Escort side quest.
  • Puke n Nuke - adds Toxic (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to various weapons. Found in Slums.
  • Rooster - adds Bleeding (Level 2) to two handed hammer. Found in Old Town.
  • Short Circuit - adds Electricity (Level 2) to pick, clever, sword and others. Found in Slums.
  • Spiked Collar - adds Bleeding (Level 2) to pipe and baseball bat. Found in Slums.
  • Standard Issue Hellfire - adds Burning (Level 1) to melee. Requires: melee weapon, 1 x Metal Part, 1 x Gauze, 1 x Aerosol.
  • Stay Down - adds Impact (Level 2) to two handed hammer and axe. Found in Slums.
  • Stinky Edge - adds Toxic (Level 2) to various weapons. Requires: 1 x Metal, 1 x Gauze.
  • Strobe Knight - adds Bleeding (Level 2), Electricity (Level 2) to machete and sword.
  • Surprise MFS - adds Electricity (Level 2), Toxic (Level 2) to various weapons.
  • Tazer - adds Electricity (Level 2) to long and short knife.
  • Thorn Crown - adds Bleeding (Level 1), Electricity (Level 1) to pipe and baseball bat. Found in Slums.
  • Toxic Reaper - adds Bleeding (Level 2), Toxic (Level 2) to various swords and blades.
  • Tru-Action Electric Baseball - adds Electricity (Level 2) to baseball bat. Found in Slums.
  • Water Current - adds Electricity (Level 2) to pipe. Found in Slums.
  • Welder - adds Burning (Level 2) to wrench, hammer and others. Found in Slums.
  • Zappo - adds Electricity (Level 2), Burning (Level 2) to long and short knife.
  • Zazhigalka - adds fire effect to attacks. Requires: 1 x Metal Parts, 1 x String, 1 x Nails, 2 x Aerosol, 1 x Gauze.
  • Zombie Classic Mod - adds Electricity (Level 2) to machete. Gained from side quest Electric Machete.


Utilities

  • Medikit - revive health instantly. Requires: 1 x Alcohol, 1 x Gauze.
  • Lockpick - open locked doors and chests with these items.
  • Firecrackers - unlocked through the skills menu. Requires: 1 x Plastic, 1 x Household Supplies.
  • Speed Booster - potion which provides temporary speed increase. Requires: 2 x Herb, 1 x Unknown.
  • Night Vision Booster - see better in the dark. Requires: 2 x Herb, 1 x Unknown.
  • Resistance Booster - increase health temporarily. Requires: 2 x Herb, 1 x Unknown.
  • Stamina Booster - increase stamina temporarily. Requires: 2 x Herb, 1 x Unknown.


Other Blueprints

  • Conducting Liquid - enhances effects of electric blueprints and traps.
  • Flammable liquid - enhances effects of flammable blueprints.


Secret Blueprint - Night Hunter

There’s a secret potion in Dying Light called the Night Hunter Potion. You can only get this potion during Night Hunter invasions by killing the other players that attack you and your friends. Collect their Hunter Glands and craft the Night Hunter potion using the Glands together with Gauze and Alcohol.

This is by far the best potion in the game because it dramatically improves your power. It should be reserved for the toughest fights!
