Spec Ops – Analysis

Armoury

The 'armoury' is the new in game 'shop' for buying and upgrading your weapons, killstreaks and equipment. Each armoury location is for one of these types so you'll need to move between the different armouries as you need to buy weapons, killstreaks or equipment during the game.

Depending on the level you're on, these armoury locations are best used during the break between waves. Using your money earned from previous waves you can buy new rewards in exchange for cash.

Armoury locations are shown on the screen by semi-transparent red icons. One of the plane (airsupport killstreaks), a grenade (for equipment) and a gun (for weapons).

Spec Ops ArmouryExamples of equipment upgrades

  • Frag grenade refill (grenades that explode into small pieces, not sticky)
  • Flashbang refill (flashbangs impair sight and temporarily blind enemies)
  • Claymore (just like a landmine, triggered by movement)
  • C4 (sticky plastic explosive that is detonated manually)
  • Auto Turret (a sentry gun that kills enemies for you, static but moveable)
  • Auto grenade launcher (just what is says on the tin!)
  • Last stand (unknown)

Examples of Air Support armoury

  • Predator Missile (similar to the Valkyrie Rockets in Black Ops but these do straight down to the ground, there's no endless flying round the map for the perfect hit)
  • Delta Squad (reinforcements that will fight with you)
  • Riot Shield Squad (reinforcements that come with Riot Shields similar to those in MW2)

Reinforcements appear on your map as green arrows. It's the same as allies in multiplayer games.

Bonus challenges

Spec Ops challengesComplete different challenges during the game to earn bonus credits to spend in the armoury. The trailer showed us the following in game challenges:

  • Assists $500
  • Headshots $500
  • Flash kills $500
  • Killstreak $1000
  • Knife Streak $500
  • Rampage $500
  • Quad Kill $500

Promotions

Spec Ops PromotionsEarn promotions as you survive the endless waves of enemies. Each promotion gives you a new reward such as:

  • Extreme conditioning
  • StiRep
  • Steady Aim

These promotions are just like perks that reward you for your skill during the game. Unlock more promotions to achieve more perks and become battle hardened for the later survival rounds. Enemies become harder to beat and waves will intensify so earning promotions is key to surviving in Spec Ops.

Wave bonuses

Spec Ops Wave bonusesYou'll earn rewards depending on your performance during the last wave (Combat Performance). You and your teammate will earn cash for the time taken to complete the wave and your performance during it. The trailer showed a time of 83 seconds, so just over a minute and a half, which rewarded the player with $50. If you complete the wave in a faster time you can expect to earn more cash in return.
