If you are thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 then you should use the official Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft to check if your system is ready. Although upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is pretty easy, using the upgrade advisor is an intelligent pre-emptive choice.

The Windows 7 upgrade advisor scans your current systems configuration to check software, hardware and devices for potential issues or conflicts with Windows 7. The advisor also gives you recommendations before you upgrade, helping to avoid those painstaking hours trying to resolve them later.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor also checks for compatibility issues. Remember if your PC can run Windows Vista, then it can probably run Windows 7 (although memory and processor speed will help things a little), but it is still a good idea to use the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Before you use the upgrade advisor, make sure you plug in your PC and turn on any USB devices or other devices, such as printers, external hard disks, and scanners, that you regularly use with the PC you are checking. Its important that your system does not go into hibernation during the scan.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor also informs you of possible Windows 7 upgrade options (there are a few different versions available for Windows 7). Within minutes, you get a full report that tells you if your PC meets the system requirements, if any known compatibility issues with your hardware, devices, and installed programs are found, and it also gives guidance on what to do to before installing Windows 7 on your PC.

How to run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

1. Download and run Windows7UpgradeAdvisorSetup.exe to install Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

2. If your PC is running Windows XP, setup will make sure .NET Framework 2.0 is installed. If it is not found, setup will help you install it.

3. Plug in and turn on any USB devices or other devices, such as printers, external hard disks, and scanners, that you regularly use with the PC you are checking

4. Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from your start menu or desktop

5. Follow the on screen prompts and information will be displayed after the full advisor scan
