God of War - How to Unlock the Best Armour Sets

Posted in god of war

The PS4 version of God of War contains a handful of unique Armour Sets which are arguably the best in the game. These sets provide players with extra perks for wearing one or more pieces, such as health regeneration, shields, increased perk activation etc. In this guide I'll explain exactly how to unlock these top tier armour sets.

You may have seen from my previous guides that the new God of War has a four tier rarity system: Green, Blue, Purple and Gold types. These Gold armour pieces make up the games best armour, much like Exotic pieces on other RPG games.

The key to getting these amazing armour sets is to unlock them first. The process varies with each set but usually involves collecting a certain amount of very rare material such as Muspelheim cipher or Niflheim cipher, or killing end-game bosses such as Valkyrie's. Once unlocked, the new armour sets appear in shops, ready to craft or purchase.

Ok, let's take a look at each of the best armour sets...

Valkyrie Armour

Valkyrie Armour example

Arguably the best armour in the game but for a good reason. To unlock this armour set, you must defeat the Valkyries that are hidden in God of War. These end game boss fights are pretty tough and you must already have the secret key to unlock Hidden Chambers:

See the additional guide on acessing Hidden Chambers.

Every time you defeat a Valkyrie there's a small chance that a Valkyrie armour piece will drop. It's not guaranteed and there's no way of telling which piece you'll get from each fight. That said, by the time you've killed all of them you should have the entire set.

Unlike some of the other armour sets in God of War, each piece of the Valkyrie set offers a different perk activation. The chest armor has a low perk activation chance of Unstoppable Aura, which prevents interruptions from enemy attacks on successful hits. Wrist armor has a low perk activation chance of instantly refreshing all Runic Attack cooldowns on any successful Runic Attack kill. The waist armor has a high perk activation chance to grant a blessing of Runic when using a Runic Attack.

The set also has some of the highest stat increases with Cooldown as a notable example.

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 16 12 12
Runic 12 9 9
Defence 55 42 42
Vitality 9 6 6
Cooldown 23 17 17

Niflheim Armor

Niflheim Armor example

The Niflheim sets are arguably the second best armour in the game since their perk gives you a small amount of health regeneration which stack up to a maximum of five times.

To unlock the Niflheim armor sets, you must find four pieces of Niflheim cipher. Finding this material automatically unlocks the armor for purchase in any of the shops. Once unlocked, players also have to find additional common crafting materials within the Niflheim area.

The Niflheim Armor sets all begin with the name "Ivaldi". Here they are:

Ivaldi's Deadly Mist Armor

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 28 22 22
Runic 22 17 17
Defence 58 44 44
Vitality 16 12 12

Ivaldi's Cursed Mist Armor

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 20 16 16
Runic 44 34 34
Defence 60 44 44

Ivaldi's Endless Mist Armor

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 20 16 16
Defence 73 55 55
Vitality 28 21 21

See the additional guide for Niflheim cipher map locations.

Muspelheim Armour

Muspelheim Armour example

The Muspelheim Armor sets are unlocked in a similar manner to the Niflheim sets above. To unlock them, you must find four pieces of Muspelheim cipher. Once found, the sets are unlocked in any shop. There are also common Muspelheim related materials that must be collected to complete the final purchase.

See the additional guide for finding all of the Muspelheim cipher map locations.

These sets have moderate stat values, with a nice Cooldown stat from the Blazing Magma set and a relatively high Defense stat from the Fallen Ash set..

Smouldering Brimstone Armour

Every piece of Smouldering Brimstone armour has the moderate perk activation chance of Aura of Fire. This increases strength and restores a small amount of health when taking damage. As a set bonus, equipping the entire set increases the chance of activation.

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 24 18 18
Defence 31 24 24
Vitality 6 4 4

Fallen Ash Armour

Each piece of the Fallen Ash armor set has a moderate perk activation chance of Retaliation of Fire. This inflicts concussive Burn damage to nearby enemies when taking damage. As above, equipping the entire set increases the overall activation chance.

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 10 7 7
Defence 40 30 30

Blazing Magma Armour

Each piece of the Blazing Magma armor set has a moderate perk activation chance of Magma Shield. This forms a fiery shield that inflicts Burn damage to enemies and prevents interruptions by attacks when taking damage. Equipping the entire set increases the overall activation chance.

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 10 7 20
Defence 34 26 26
Cooldown 22 16 16

Traveller's Armour

Traveller's Armor example

This armour set has an associated trophy: Path of the Zealot Trophy.

This armour set might not be the best in this list but is still a worthy contender. To unlock the Travellers set in a shop, simply kill a Traveller (the huge enemies with shields on their backs and enormous swords).

A notification should pop up saying that you can craft a new type of armor. Now repeat the process and kill more Travellers to collect their Armor Shards, Grisly Trophies etc. to complete the crafting recipe for the Travellers Armour.

On the perks side, the chest armor slowly regenerates a protective barrier that absorbs a single attack, whilst the wrist armor increases the damage inflicted from all bare-handed attacks by 6% (stacks up to 18% max) and the waist armor has no special perks.

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 10 7 7
Defence 34 25 25
Vitality 20 14 14

Ancient Armour

This set has an associated trophy: Primordial.

To unlock the Ancient Armor set, simply kill the Ancients and collect their hearts as crafting materials. The Ancient set's perk is defense from elemental damage: Frost, Burn, and Poison. Each piece gives you 15% resistance, stacking up to 45% max.

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 18 10 6
Runic / 6 /
Defence 36 27 27
Cooldown / / 10

Tyr's Armour

The Tyr's armour set has a broad spread of small stat increases with the highest improvements falling in the Defense category. The best thing about the Tyr set is that players can grab it quite early in the game.

To unlock this set, find the several Wayward Spirits that you find around the Lake of Nine. Complete the favors that they ask you and you'll unlock the Tyr's Armor set.

All three pieces of Tyr's Armor has a low perk activation chance to grant a short boost to Strength, Defence, or Runic when taking damage.

Stats Chest Wrist Waist
Strength 5 3 3
Runic 4 3 3
Defence 24 18 18
Vitality 3 2 2
Luck 6 4 4
Cooldown 7 5 5
