70-519 Exam Overview - MCPD 4

70-519 is one of the new Visual Studio 2010 exams covering the .NET Framework 4. Official title is: Designing and Developing Web Applications Using Microsoft .NET Framework. Exam available from summer of 2010.

The 70-519 exam will test your knowledge and understanding on designing and developing Web applications using Microsoft .NET 4 and Visual Studio 2010. You'll need to be strong in the latest web trends and technologies including jquery and AJAX asynchronous programming, Windows Communications Foundation (WCF) and all round good web forms development skills.

This exam requires the following MCTS .NET 4 prerequisites:

  • MCTS: .NET Framework 4, Web Applications
  • MCTS: .NET Framework 4, Service Communication Applications
  • MCTS: .NET Framework 4, Data Access


Important:You'll also need to pass all of these MCTS exams before you can achieve the MCPS: Web Developer 4 certification.

Like the 70-518 exam, the 70-519 exam is part of the MCPD certification goupr. As with all MCPD certifications, they concentrate more on the best practices and high level development aspect. It's not all about hands on coding, but more about developing overall solutions. Candidates for the MCPD Web Developer 4 certification typically have two to three years of relevant experience and a commitment to remaining current in best practices and technologies.

As usual, questions that contain code will be presented in either VB or C#. You get the choice to select which language you prefer when you start the exam. Officially, Microsoft recommends that you area professional who designs and develops Web applications by using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.They suggest that a minimum of three years of experience developing applications, including one to two years of experience working with ASP .NET technologies.

Before you take the 70-519 exam you should have the following experience:

  • Designing and developing modern Web user experiences by using such technologies as AJAX and jQuery
  • Consuming business and data services such as REST, WS-*, Windows Communications Foundation (WCF), and Microsoft ADO.NET Data Services
  • Full software development life cycle
  • Web application architectures such as ASP.NET MVC and Web Form
  • State management for Web applications by using ASP.NET

  • JavaScript, ASP .NET, AJAX, jQuery and Silverlight
  • Web controls, user controls, web parts, dynamic controls and HtmlHelper extensions

  • Cross browser planning � bandwidth, mobile
  • Globalisation
  • ADO .Net, WCF, Web Services
  • Validation
  • Security � CAS, application pools, remote resources etc.
  • Minimizing attack surfaces � throttling, request filtering, SSL
  • Testing � API, regression, black box, white box
  • Debugging � tools, binding, attach to process
  • Performance � monitoring, counters, tracing
  • Deployment � xcopy, MSI, web deployment tool
  • Configuration � web.config, IIS, machine.config
  • Stability � architecture, scaling up, load balancing
  • Health monitoring � throttling, delivery method, stats


When you pass the 70-519 exam (Pro: Designing and Developing Web Applications Using Microsoft .NET Framework 4) you achieve the following certification:
