The Settlers was easily the best strategy game for the Amiga. Although it was slow paced, the game introduced many principles which hadn’t been seen before. Indeed it was one of the first strategy games to introduce the idea of resource gathering, structured building and strategic combat.
Several years before Command and Conquer and Red Alert would dominate the RTS genre, The Settlers was the medieval strategy game that was blowing the minds of Amiga fans. It’s cute graphics and great music were combined with a very deep and playable strategy engine. All of this made The Settlers one of the contenders for game of the year award.
Players would compete against the computer to dominate land, gather resources and build up their army. The game offered many different roles including wood cutters, blacksmiths, farmers, knights, miners, fishermen and many others. Choosing to collect the right resources and branching out at the right time were tactical decisions that made every game of The Settlers unique.
