The original game in the X-COM series and considered to be one of the best video games ever made. MicroProse developed this turn based strategy game where humans take on the aliens after an invasion. Similar to syndicate, you get the chance to better your weapons through funding and also the chance to take on the aliens in the combat mode. The game has some great aliens and a well structured and very playable style. Play UFO Enemy Unknown and you will know what to expect from other X-COM games such as X-COM Enemy Unknown (the remake).
