Minecraft | How to Create a Pickaxe

A pickaxe is one of the most important tools in the Minecraft game. You'll need it to collect ores and other stronger materials (those which are more durable). You can create several kinds of pickaxe, from wooden ones to diamond ones. Obviously the more precious the material, the more durable the axe is.

Different types of pickaxe you can create:

Wood
Stone
Iron
Diamond
Gold

Diamond pickaxes are the strongest and the wooden and gold axes are the weakest. Depending how early in the game you are, the wooden pickaxe will probably be your main excavation tool.

To create any of the pickaxe types you need to combine 2 sticks together with 3 items of the material. e.g. 2 sticks and 3 wooden planks OR 2 sticks and 3 diamonds.

Pickaxe Recipe

1. Open the crafting grid
2. Drag across 2 wooden sticks from your inventory and place them in the middle and bottom middle squares
3. Drag across 3 materials (wood, stone, iron, diamond or gold) and place them in a line at the top of the grid to form a T shape.
4. Drag your new pickaxe into your inventory

Note: You will need a 3x3 crafting table to create a pickaxe

Why do you need a pickaxe?

A pickaxe is much stronger than using your bare hands to collect resources. Its also much faster which saves you a lot of time. Each pickaxe can only be used a certain number of times (depending on the material it was made from).
