Minecraft Mob Trap Tutorial - Water Trap to Kill Mobs and Collect Items

Mob Trap This Minecraft tutorial explains how to create a mob trap that kills mobs and collects their dropped items for you automatically. Powered by deadly water, the trap is easy to build using only raw resources.

This mob trap will:

  • Automatically kill mobs
  • Allow you to collect mob resources without fighting
  • Will work without power or Redstone circuits

How does the trap work

Like most water based mob traps the power and depth of the trap water is enough to suck the mob under and drown them. The central cage area is a safe house used by the player to watch mobs getting trapped.

What resources do I need?

  • Stone half blocks
  • Wooden blocks
  • Ladders
  • Water (springs)
  • Glass

Skill level

This mob trap is designed for beginners or intermediate players.

How to build the trap

Ok, follow these steps to build the trap:

1. Clear an area large enough for a 15x15 square. This is where we'll build the trap.

2. Now make a rectangle using 15x15 half blocks. This requires about 52 blocks in total. Just cover the edge of the rectangle, do not fill in the middle.

Mob Trap Step 2

3. The mob trap will be contained in this rectangle.

4. Create another inner rectangle with any other material e.g. wood.

Mob Trap Step 4

5. Now place two blocks inside each of the corners, as shown in the image below:

Mob Trap Step 5

6. Now we're going to dig out the middle ready to fill with water. Just dig out the middle of the rectangle 1 level deep.

Mob Trap Step 6

7. Now dig one level lower but leave a ridge around the edge of the rectangle. As you can see in the image below..

Mob Trap Step 7

8. Dig down again another 2 levels

This next part is a little tricky so follow the images carefully...

9. Build a floating ring of wood in the middle of the hole you just dug. To create a floating ring, you'll need to place one block on the floor then build the floating blocks. Once the rings built, you can destroy that block to leave the structure floating (that's right Minecraft lefts you defy gravity!!)

Mob Trap Step 8

10. Stand on the right and build two 4 block high columns at either end of the ring. We need these so that ladders can be placed against them. See image below:

Mob Trap Step 10

11. Once they're built, you can fill the walls of the ‘cage' with glass to make a kind of green house building. You don't have to use glass but it does make it more fun seeing the mobs getting stuck. The cage is the area where you'll hide to tempt mobs into the water.

Mob Trap Step 11

12. There's one final piece we need to add to the cage and they're ladders. These will stop mobs from getting inside the cage area of the trap. Just cover the wooden block areas of the cage with ladders. They will also help you get out!!

Mob Trap Step 12

13. Now fill the area inside the rectangle with water (spring blocks). Start with the edges so you get a water current flowing into the deeper middle area.

Mob Trap Step 13

14. That's it, the mob trap is ready to use!!
